Buck Rogers: Countdown to Doomsday (1990)

by SSI (Strategic Simulations, Inc.), Tec Toy
Genres:Role-playing (RPG), Adventure
Themes:Science fiction
Game modes:Single player
Story:It's 2456. Earth is under the control of NEO now, but the shadow of RAM is still present. Occasional attacks by RAM military are explained away as "acts of overanxious officers and "unfortunate lapses of judgement." NEO scrambles to rebuild a shattered planet and build the forces required to fend off the RAM attack it feels is inevitable. "Buck Rogers!" The name is everywhere. "Buck Rogers and NEO victory at Gauntlet- Vid at eleven." The Video Network News, people talking on the streets of old Earth, even in the furthest asteroid outposts--Buck Rogers and NEO are everywhere. There is a feeling of hope now. After years of domination, RAM no longer holds old Earth, and NEO is finally able to make a real stand against the corporate behemoth. Victories, real and exaggerated, boost NEO confidence daily. NEO ranks are swelling with new recruits -young people who never before felt they could make a difference. Your team is assembled from those ranks. Each member has made his or her way to Chicagorg with plans to join the war against RAM supremacy. Each has visions of great victories, glory, and lasting fame--like Buck Rogers.... To play Countdown to Doomsday, you must make characters and band them together into a team. The team must have a variety of talents and skills to survive and finally succeed.Show more

this was on of my favorite games playing back on dos when i was a kid. trying to keep zane alive after his family was attacked on his planet. the laser pistols, rocket grenades, napalm, keeping your ship alive while you attacked. the art on the box and cool visuals. the role playing ability to roll for skills. it was ahead of its time and the story was awesome. I only wish GOG would bring it back and let us play it once more.

I've only really played it on Mega Drive and it's rough as guts but modern standards but it's such a good game if you give it a chance, I always consider it's like a (very) primitive mass effect. I haven't ended it for years but always find myself coming back to it again and again

It's one of this games that I like to visit again from time to time. It's a nice adventure that I played with my brother in our beloved Megadrive. It has its charm. We loved to asault enemy and pirate ships.

Back in the old guys when you could rent games from video shops, I was looking for something new to play when I saw the box for the Mega Drive version. The game generally didn't review all that well in the magazines, but even at a young age I knew to trust my own instincts. It was the first time I'd ever played an RPG, and I wasn't quite sure what to make of it. I didn't get very far and stopped playing for a while, but I qas drawn back in as I still had a few days before I had yo return it. Then, the drama of the opening mission finally got me and I was hooked. I was determined to find out where the story went and carried on playing. I was unfamiliar with the Buck Rogers character at the time, but thankfully this was not a barrier to enjoying the game. When I had to return it, I knew I needed to play it again. I decided to swap my copy of Alien Storm with the shop owner, and the game was mine to own (he thought I was mad)! I finally managed to complete the game and thoroughly enjoyed the epic story, and the battles were simplified enough to be strategic but still fast paced. Although there were cut backs from the DOS version, I much preferred controlling a character to explore the world during the isometric sections. I also enjoyed piloting the spaceship and engaging in space battles, and learned to take over enemy ships rather than destroying them. I am aware that the Buck Rogers license is in the midst of an ongoing legal battle, but GOG have proved that they can get these games released (Alpha Protocol and The Thing are good examples). Here's hoping I get to play this great game again on modern hardware!

This the type of game I have a GOG account for. A great old school RPG. The Genesis version had better graphics but the PC version had more quest weapons and races. Please good bring this one.

My favorite game when I was a kid. Spent hours on this game, in the Mega Drive (Genesis). So good. Please bring it back so I can relive the great story, awesome music and all the different game play styles!
This was one of my all-time favorite games growing up. I remember scribbling notes on the Rule Book and Journal, so I knew where I was. When I saw the old SSI Dungeons and Dragons games available here and Steam, I got super excited but haven't seen this one available for some reason. Would be super excited to see this available on GOG as part of the Preservation Program.
Those games also need your vote!

Pokémon HeartGold
Pokémon HeartGoldPokémon HeartGold Version and Pokémon SoulSilver Version are paired Generation IV remakes of the Generation II games Pokémon Gold and Silver. Much like how Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen revisited the Generation I story of Kanto, HeartGold and SoulSilver retell the story of Johto, with the player's starting town being New Bark Town. While the games feature several expansions in key areas, the overall plot follows the same direction as the original Gold and Silver. Some aspects exclusive to Crystal are also included. Like how FireRed and LeafGreen could link up with Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald to complete the Pokédex by trading regionally exclusive Pokémon, HeartGold and SoulSilver can link up with Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum to obtain Pokémon unavailable in Johto and Kanto (such as the Sinnoh starters) and vice versa. Kris, despite being the female counterpart of Crystal's player character, is not included as the female player character, with a new character instead taking her place. Whether she is chosen to be the player character or not, this new character will still appear in the game. The unselected protagonist will take a pseudo-rival role similar to the unselected characters of Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum. The games were released on September 12, 2009 in Japan, February 4, 2010 in Korea, March 14, 2010 in North America, March 25, 2010 in Australia and March 26, 2010 in Europe (this excludes the Netherlands, Luxembourg and parts of Belgium due to an in-game save error, with the patched copies later released on April 2, 2010).
