So many good memories of trying different combinations of gladiators! Watching to see if Ursula and Valens would end up together! Never will forget this game!

(as of this writing those two first person screenshots are NOT from this game) A real hidden gem of its time, Gladius is a cherished experience for me. Has a real KOTOR 1 tone to its story full of character and dramatic moments through one of two chosen routes that eventually converge. Either the son of a war hero from Imperia (fantasy rome) or the daughter descended from the King of the warrior nation of Nordagh (fantasy germanic tribes). Beyond its actual plot, it has a kind of emergent story telling similar to XCOM with its recruitable gladiators, ranging from more traditional warriors like secutors, archers, and axe wielding barbarians, to witches, assorted animals, a few unique fantasy creatures, and the undead. Serwacy the secutor sounds like every other male secutor, but through their successes, failures, and a few voice lines, units tended to take a life of their own for me (and although the armor gear slot doesnt change the visual, you can customize hair, skin, and armor colors, and helmets, weapons, and shields do affect the model). There's such a visual and functional variety in the classes, as well as in the stages. Fighting takes place in a wide range of arenas from standard colosseums rings, palace courtyards, and an animal pen or two (gotta start somewhere), to inside a volcano, atop a snowy mountain, or among the bones of a dragon god. not to oversell it though, the graphics are decent for the time, textures are good, baked lighting does the job, but particle effects are pretty lacking. still, the games full of color and character, not to mention the soundtrack courtesy of lucasarts' in-house orchestra. naturally all of this is colored by my nostalgia. it got lots of 8's and 9's back then, never rated below a 7 if I remember right. worst I can say about it in my bias from recent playthroughs is the early pace is a bit slow. all of it together though creates a fantastic turn based rpg, and one I believe deserves as much attention as it can get.
so many amazing characters you can recruit and add to your ranks from many different regions, like sorcerers (both undead and human), amazons, ogres, cyclops, even bugs like scarab beetles and scorpions. each of them have their own movesets and animations, different ways of traversing the environment. magic spells you can master to throw the tides of battle like summoning monsters and even elemental gods. top quality acting talent from linda cardinelli (velma from scooby doo (2002), freaks and geeks) who plays ursula, michael rosenbaum (lex luther in smallville) who plays valens and jason marsden (haku from spirited away) who plays ludo. more and more people need to play this game, truly a fun time
Tactical turn-based, grid-based RPG with leveling and unique skills sets, a bunch of weapon/item choices, both story and generic characters, in a gladiatorial setting with some occult/folklore/mythological stuff tossed in? Yes, please. Closest we've gotten since is probably the arena fighting in Battle Brothers or the pit fighting in Wartales. Give me a few quality of life improvements, a couple of balance changes, and remove the cap on the number of gladiators we can have and I will give you all of the money. I hooked up my PS2 just last year to specifically play this game only to find out it apparently went to console heaven in the 15 years that had passed since it was last hooked up.

Before XCOM Enemy Unknown, there was this gem of a tactical RPG. Played it a LOT on XBOX (original). So many characters to pick from to build your own unique gladiator squad. With 2 protagonists to start with, it added a bit of replay potential. Always hoped for a sequel, but love to see it pop up on GOG as I haven't played it in years.

This really feels like a game that could only have come from the PS2 era. Jank, unfinished, horribly slow but completely unique and seemingly made only for the subset of people that might click with it to enjoy.

We got this for Xbox and jammed 4-player. Everythign we could have wanted out of a gladiator tactics game. everyone had thier own character. We took this to a buddies grandparents where they had a basement setup as an Ode to Gaming. (There was a TV with Tetris that never shut off, high scores burned across the screens of the CRT.) We darkened the room and spent several days jamming on our vacation. We were a vicious lot when it came to our enemies. Lol

Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D
Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3DMetal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D is a stealth action game for the Nintendo 3DS. It is a re-release of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. The game was released on February, 21, 2012 in North America and on March 8, 2012 in Japan and Europe. It is also the first Metal Gear game to be released on a Nintendo-developed portable system since Metal Gear: Ghost Babel, back in 2000. A digital download version was released in Japan via the Nintendo eShop function on the Nintendo 3DS on December 16, 2014, exactly a decade after the initial release of the original title. The download includes a Snake Eater theme, which included a FOX logo wallpaper, the theme song for the game, cursor sound effects from the Metal Gear series, and folders modeled after the cardboard boxes from the series. Both the digital download for the game itself as well as the 3DS theme were later released in both Europe and North America on December 18, with the game itself costing $19.99. A patch was released a day later to fix a glitch occurring in the WIG area that freezes the game and corrupts save data when using the Circle Pad Pro

Black & White 2
Black & White 2In the game, the player takes the role of a god called from the void (nothingness) to help those who invoked them. However, the player is not an omnipotent style god, but rather a god who rises and falls with his believers and the player must help develop their nature according to their good or evil desires. The player also has a creature, their physical representation in the world, which takes the form of an anthropomorphic ape, lion, wolf, turtle, cow, or tiger. Its physical manifestation can grow to an immense size, and adopt a good or evil persona separate of the player's. They develop their character as the player rewards or punishes their actions. In addition to the god simulation and city-building elements introduced in the original Black & White, Black & White 2 also features elements of real-time strategy gameplay, with the addition of controllable warfare and fighting units.

Metal Gear Acid
Metal Gear AcidMetal Gear Acid is a turn-based collectable card game. It was the first game in the Metal Gear series for the PSP. A Java ME version for mobile phones was released by Glu Mobile in 2008 titled Metal Gear Acid Mobile. Acid focuses on turn-based tactics, using a trading card-based system to control the main character's movements and actions. Acid in the name stands for "Active Command Intelligence Duel". The cards are not truly collectable, as the game is complete with a single purchase. However, the game does feature deck design and deck optimization elements. The game allows for multiplayer gameplay by wireless ad-hoc connections of two PSPs. Before each round, the player can customize the deck of cards used by the main characters. Most cards are based on elements spanning the entire Metal Gear series, such as weaponry, characters, and even the Metal Gear itself. When the game is started, the player's hand can consist of a maximum of six cards. The maximum number of cards in a deck increases with overall progress. In action mode, the player can choose to use the cards as intended or use them to move the character. Most cards only allow the player to move three spaces, while certain cards let the player move up to six or higher. Cost is an important factor in gameplay and can be summed up as the weight of the player's action. With some exceptions, all cards have a cost attached to them and when used this cost transfers to the player. Cost varies radically from card to card. The higher the cost a character has, the longer that character must wait until their next turn. For example: if a player character has a cost of 15 and a guard has a cost of 10, then the guard's turn would occur before the character's. Some cards can be equipped; cards such as weapon cards, can have other cards attached to them in order to improve performance. In order to fire the weapon, another weapon card that uses the same kind of ammunition must be equipped. Some weapons don't need to be equipped and can be used by themselves, however, they are discarded afterwards. Other cards that can be equipped include equipment cards and action cards. Multiplayer, or "Link Battle", is also a new feature. Two PSP systems running Acid can link wirelessly, allowing players to face each other in a "sneak-off". The objective is to collect several diskettes before the rival player. Diskettes can be stolen by another player, so there is an emphasis on avoiding detection.
