The events of the game follow those depicted in the book rather closely, though a few characters and occurrences are not present, and many quests have been added. I couldn’t play this game very well, and knew nothing of the lore at the time. I just liked walking around and listening to the music… I wanna say that I attacked… Lobelia, was it? She wanted Bag End from Frodo or something… and as I kept traveling either a wolf or a black rider would show up and wipe my entire party. Those were some fun times.

I own the Multimedia CD-ROM version of this that includes movie clips from the 1978 film. It was a fantastic game, and is actually where my avatar comes from. I remember playing this game when it first came out and was blown away by the sound, music, and graphics. I imagine the CD-ROM version will never become available on GOG, but it is a game that deserves to be shared with the masses. There is a lot of interesting tidbits about the development of the game and how the Tolkien estate wanted the game to focus more on exploration and less on violence. Hence, why there are some battles and pivotal scenes where you win by utilizing "words of power" (such as Elbereth or Luthien), or you have to run away. This game covers a lot of areas that were not covered in the films, but was covered in the books. You even get to meet Tom Bombadil! Overall, I really enjoyed the game, and wished Interplay could have finished the trilogy (we only received Volume I and II), as these games had a great mix of exploration, puzzle-solving, combat, and adventure. One thing to note, this game is not the same as the one that was released on the SNES, as that was more action focused. While this is more adventure-RPG.

The oldest gaming memory I have with the feel of truly being in another, exciting world where I could hide from troubles of the time... the place i have often read the Ultima series having for them. So under the radar I was beginning to wonder if it was a false memory patched together from something else.

Ningyo no Rakuin
Ningyo no RakuinNingyo no Rakuin is a tactical horror RPG inspired by the works of Howard Phillips Lovecraft. Between the fanatical quasi-human tribesmen, the Deep Ones rising from beneath the waves, and the grad student from Miskatonic University, there are more references to the Mythos than you can shake a shoggoth at. The plot itself is fast-paced, centering first on surviving the dangers of the island and later on rescuing the main character's girlfriend from a particularly nasty fate involving an unnamed Elder God and a transformation into a fishy abomination. Elements of the storyline play out before and after (and sometimes during) each battle, and the interludes between battle chapters include a short summary of recent events leading up to the current plot point.

Phantasy Star Collection
Phantasy Star CollectionPhantasy Star Collection is a compilation of Phantasy Star games that was released on the Game Boy Advance on November 26, 2002 in the United States and in March 2003 in Europe. This version, produced by Digital Eclipse, altered the classic titles in order to function within the Game Boy Advance's resolution. Strangely, the bundle omitted the fan-favorite Phantasy Star IV: The End of the Millennium from its selection of games, only offering Phantasy Star, Phantasy Star II, and Phantasy Star III: Generations of Doom.

Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner
Shin Megami Tensei: Devil SummonerThis is the original 1995 Devil Summoner game on the Sega Saturn and was released only in Japan. It was later ported to PSP in 2005. Abandoning the post-apocalyptic themes of the original series, the story takes place in modern Japan. The player character is an unnamed college student who is attacked by demons along with his girlfriend; they are saved by the timely appearance of a suave demon-hunter named Kyouji. Shortly thereafter, Kyouji is found dead under suspicious circumstances. The protagonist is then trapped inside of a warehouse and murdered by a deranged killer named Sid. Rather than stay dead, the player finds himself in the reanimated body of the slain Kyouji, and escapes from the morgue. With the help of Kyouji's voice, which guides the player from inside his head, the main character joins up with Kyouji's female partner Rei in order to save the life of his girlfriend, who is still in danger.
