Playing Octopath Traveler felt like going on the journey of a lifetime with a group of characters who will become close friends. The bonds I formed and the memories we made will stay with me forever. It is one of those games that has left an indelible mark on my memory. It has conquered a place in my heart. This is why I would love to be able to revisit all the places and relieve those golden memories, playing my very own GOG copy.
I got pretty excited for this when an old friend from the GameFAQs Top 10 Board hailed it as the second coming as SaGa Frontier, and while it doesn't quite capture the absolute magic of that universe, the absolute freedom of exploration it had is here. You finish the first chapter of the character you've chosen, check the map to see where Chapter 2 is, and it's at a much higher level than you can handle right now, and on the other side of the world; it actively encourages you to dig into its world! I was expecting something like that, but what I could never have predicted was an incredible Final-Fantasy-5-style class system (even if not as big) that lets you try out new classes and learn their skills to customize your builds. The battle system is pretty cool, too; it has some engaging new elements that really make you think about how to approach an encounter without being so needlessly complicated that you need a college-level course just to understand the basics. The stories are generally more grounded than the usual, "Save the world from cosmic destruction by killing God," and that actually manages to give them more weight. A lot of people love the artstyle, and while I think the 2D sprites in a 3D pop-up book world looks a little goofy sometimes, this game actually does use it well; a lot of classic JRPGs have hidden passages that are obnoxious to find, but this uses the perspective to sort of tease the passage that's otherwise obscured by a rock or shrub, and that's a lot more engaging to follow than trying to walk into every wall.

Dungeon Master II: The Legend of SkullkeepDungeon Master established several new standards for role playing and computer games in general. Dungeon Master was a realtime game instead of the traditional turn-based approach that was prevalent until then. Instead of using text-based commands to interact with the environment, players directly manipulated objects and the environment by clicking the mouse in the enlarged first-person view. Abstract Dungeons and Dragons style experience points and levels were eschewed in favor of a system where the characters' skills were improved directly via using them. It also introduced some novel control methods including the spell casting system, which involved learning sequences of runes which represented the form and function of a spell's effect. For example, a fireball spell was created by mixing the fire symbol with the wing symbol. This kind of attention to detail and focus on the user interface was typical of the game and helped create an often captivating sense of craft and ingenuity. Other factors in immersiveness were the then-revolutionary use of sound effects to indicate when a creature was nearby, and (primitive) dynamic lighting.

Final Fantasy IV
Final Fantasy IVFinal Fantasy IV is a remake of the classic Japanese RPG that was first released for SNES, known as Final Fantasy II in the West. Unlike the many subsequent ports (to Playstation, GameBoy Advance, etc.), this release is a full remake, programmed from scratch with real-time 3D graphics. The characters have a "super-deformed" touch. There is also voice acting during cut-scenes. A new option has been added to the menu, which allows the player to read a conversation between party members and receive advice from them. It also features many gameplay additions. The difficulty level has been increased, not only beyond the difficulty of the Western SNES release (which was reduced compared to Japanese original and subsequent ports), but even beyond the original difficulty. The party members are still bound by class, but they can now hunt for so-called "augments", which can be found or stolen from enemies and which grant the characters additional bonus abilities, resistances, spells that their class would normally not allow, etc. Beside those major changes, there are also plenty of minor additions. It is possible to obtain bonus items after exploring every corner and filling 100% of an area map; Rydia, the summoner girl, has a new monster summon who can be customized in various ways; there is a new quest involving the "naming" moogle of the original game, etc.

Over the course of the first half of the game, the Hero will overthrow Logan and become ruler of Albion themselves. FreelancerEight hundred years prior to the start of our story, bitter conflict divided all of mankind. A handful of colonists struck out on their own to begin anew - far away from the Earth and its turmoil. Several ships were launched with enough equipment and supplies to give the hundreds onboard a fighting chance - but since the area around far-off Sirius had never been surveyed, no one really knew what to expect. What they found was a new frontier of free-flowing natural resources, unexplored territories, great wonders and lurking dangers. Each ship, representing the clusters of people and their earthly place of origin, settled into different parts of the galaxy pre-selected by their ship-board computer to give them the best chance of survival. Life was hard in the beginning, but over the 800 years the different colonies prospered and expanded their territories, claiming more and more systems for their own. Survival and propagation eventually led to growth and profit as each of the colonies developed specialties and fostered commerce. As the colonies grew and time passed their connections with their roots on Earth dwindled and they lost their memories of the conflicts of the past. Soon their attention was dominated by new, more immediate conflicts. Feelings of lost ancestral connection spurred anachronism in the look of the great cities, and created a somewhat distorted image of each colony's cultural heritage. In the ever-expanding outer edge of the territories, frontier lawlessness prevailed. The Houses: Each shipboard colony that left Earth carried some memory of its origins in its name. The Liberty carried Americans, The Bretonia flew from The United Kingdom and surrounding territory, The Kusari from Asia, and the Rheinland launched with Germanic cargo. As each ship settled and colonies began to expand, they knew little about each other and their advancing development. Finally, little by little, the individual colonies found each other and began to set up trade routes to link their systems for commerce and solidarity. Today, with each colony firmly rooted in its respective corner of the galaxy, the colonies rely heavily on each other for trade and industry but also compete for resources and new territories in the Border Worlds. The colonies mandate member governments in "The New Alliance" within the Sirius sector. To control conflicts, each colony has forged alliances and treaties with others as they have grown. Competition remains fierce, however. Struggles rage for supremacy in business, commerce, resources, power and control. There can be tenuous peace between colonies' political agendas, but the grabs for holdings constantly unsettle the volatile frontier.
