Puyo Pop Fever

Puyo Pop Fever (2003)

by Sonic Team, Sega
Genres:Strategy, Puzzle, Music
Themes:Action
Game modes:Single player, Split screen
Story:Updated version of the classic Puyo Puyo puzzle game featuring the all-new "fever" mode. Better known in the west under the titles Puyo Pop, Kirby's Avalanche and Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine, Puyo Pop Fever still follows the classic bubble-popping format (align four or more "puyos" to make them pop), but Sega also delivers completely overhauled visuals with a more hand-drawn look, an expanded roster of characters, and a new "Fever Mode" that cranks up the action to frantic degrees once players fill a "fever gauge" on their screen. Although a four-player mode didn't make the cut, two players can go head to head and compete for points or survival.Show more

This is the game that introduced Primp Town and all of it's silly characters to the Puyo Puyo universe and I couldn't be happier about that. I remember having a lot of trouble beating Popoi for the first time and then finding out I have to complete the game with some crazy requirements for a secret character?! The cutscenes are also really funny, either intentionally or not. Honestly a super fun arcade style puzzle game that really deserves a re-release, as do all Puyo Puyo games released before Puyo Puyo Tetris.

This game brought me back into the Puyo Puyo series and was a huge comfort game for me in a dark time. I loved the silly cutscenes and the fun fever ruleset, I would love this game to get the recognition it deserves!

I remember reading about this in Nintendo Power back in '04, and always wanted to try it, but was never able to find a copy... it wasn't until after playing Puyo Puyo Tetris that I got a chance to play it, and it quickly became one of my favorites!

ParaWorld
ParaWorldThe game-concept is similar to "Age of Empires", which is a real-time strategy game. ParaWorld features food, wood, and stone as resources. Food can be picked from bushes, hunted from animals, fished from the sea, or farmed. Stone is located in limited deposits, and wood, cut from trees, is generally scattered throughout a map. Battles can occur on both land and sea. The story takes place in a parallel dimension, where prehistoric life thrives alongside diverse human civilizations that are not technologically advanced. As a result, dinosaurs take the place of traditional wildlife and livestock, though some of the dinosaurs in-game are highly stylized and not necessarily scientifically accurate. Wild-living dinosaurs can be hunted for food, though some are of dangerous and aggressive species and will attack any player unit that wanders too close. Other prehistoric creatures make an appearance as well, for example woolly mammoths are used where other games might feature elephants. Players advance through epochs in order to unlock new technologies and upgrades.

Monster Rancher 3
Monster Rancher 3Monster raising and creature contests move into the 128-bit generation as the popular Tecmo series sets up shop on the PlayStation 2 in this release of Monster Rancher 3. Though many characters and places are recognizable from earlier releases in the series, monsters in this game are represented in a cel-shaded cartoon style, similar to that of the Dreamcast's Jet Grind Radio or the contemporary PS2 release Yanya Caballista featuring Gawoo. The game receives improved graphics and some additional features with its move to the more powerful PS2 console. Most of the rules of play and monster-raising conventions established in earlier games remain in this version. Monsters develop according to the training and treatment they receive and players are encouraged to explore the game world to find new training opportunities. Players can generate monsters using other forms of media, as the game creates creatures according to data on music CDs and movie DVDs. While some aspects of creation are random, certain albums and movies may generate creatures specifically related to the artistic content on the disk.

Martian Gothic: Unification
Martian Gothic: UnificationMartian Gothic : Unification is one of the numerous titles which came out at the end of the PlayStation lifespan. At first glance, it looks like a typical Resident Evil rip-off with a futuristic paint, a disturbing cover and bad voice-acting. Of course, the game ended up selling very poorly. But it's so much more than that. Incidentally, it is also Creative Reality's last game. Sharing the same team and the same writer than Dreamweb, it comes as no surprise that the game heavily relies on writing and puzzles. This reliance (and a few more things) makes Martian Gothic: Unification a title to look back at.
