Shin Megami Tensei

Shin Megami Tensei (1992)

by Atlus
Genres:Role-playing (RPG)
Themes:Fantasy, Warfare, Science fiction
Game modes:Single player
Story:The story follows a nameless protagonist who lives in near-future Tokyo. When a portal to the realm of demons is opened, United States officials order a nuclear attack on Tokyo. Transported with two other supporting characters thirty years into the future, the protagonist finds the Earth ruined by a demon invasion, which is now the stage for an escalating conflict between the Order of Messiah and the Ring of Gaea, conflicting cults who wish to bring about kingdoms for their respective patron deities (YHVH and Lucifer). The story is influenced by moral decisions the protagonist makes, aligning him either with the Order, the Ring of Gaea, or setting him up as an independent agent. The gameplay uses first-person navigation of dungeons and turn-based battles against demons. The player can recruit demons as allies by talking to them rather than fighting them, and two to three demons can be fused to create new demons.Show more

I was so upset when support just stopped for SMTI's official translation. Despite the Japanese version making its way to switch online, for some reason the English translation never followed. I would love to be able to finish this game; I spent hours just replaying the start and having a great time.
i'll be so real. i haven't finished SMTI but getting this in an accessible fashion, on a platform most gamers can play, would absolutely change the game for SMT fans. it's such a neat game, w a compelling and curious story, and the graphical limitations only make it all the more inch resting. i hope it can come to GOG!
My favorite part of this game is that it was only available in English on iOS for a couple of years... while being older than me by 7 years... and has been on a ton of systems PlayStation, gameboy advanceed, snes, mega cd, and another console that was a monstrosity? oh also android... plus switch, and i think wii u/wii but it would be a emulated version of a previous version....i do enjoy the series and have gotten to play a little of this so i would love to actually play it officially without weird issues

I have played this game only a little. And predictably only an emulated version, due to the simple fact the game has never had an official release outside Japan. Excluding the brief and temporary release for iOS. Even with that, I know this and the other early SMT titles are extremely difficult. But with this series, it is part of the charm. If it were up to me, I'd certainly make it so that the games, including this, the very first one, would be accessible for people on newer devices. Could you actually make it happen? If you did, I'd be truly impressed.
One of the most impactful games I have ever played, and an essential for any Shin Megami Tensei/Persona fan to see how the series started. I could not vouch for any game as much as this one.
Surprisingly this game really holds up. Typically with older RPGs you expect the navigation to be a pain so you whip out the gamefaqs guide and strap it to your eyes but really I had a ton of playtime where I just wandered and kept track of what NPCs mentioned and found a way to progress naturally from there. The Imperialism (Chaos) vs Nationalism (Law) conflict is explored great here and the diverse demonic culture is intriguing even if their compendium entries are a very outdated. The combat is unfortunately braindead to where going demonless is barely a challenge run. Even if the PS1 version is the best, the IOS version should be preserved because theres no reason not to.
If this game gets a re-release, it needs an official English translation, a remastered soundtrack (with the option to switch to the SNES, Sega CD, and PS1 soundtracks), and it should be released in a 3-pack with SMT2, and SMT If...

Maybe the most obscure game with such a huge impact, Shin Megami Tensei was at the forefront of monster collection and non-fantasy rpgs of its time. I played it just a few years ago and, while it takes some getting used to the old school gameplay (especially coming fresh from Nocturne), I think it would surprise a lot of people for how fun the gameplay is and how fresh the mixing of post apocalypse cyberpunk and occult mysticism still feels. While it can get easy once you figure out how certain status effects work, that never broke the uneasy and solitary atmosphere of the rest of the game and never cheapened how much despair and dread it can instill in its early hours just fighting zombies on the streets of Tokyo. In the last dungeon of the game, I'll never forget running into a boss that negated my entire strategy and the feeling of instant horror again. It's a shame really that the foundational text for SMT and Persona and Devil Summoner and even more has only ever had one English translation that is now near impossible for most to access today, this game is a massive part of gaming history and should absolutely be preserved for future generations to have easy access to!

Farland Story 2
Farland Story 2Farland Story 2 is an independent side-story to the Farland Story series (this game shouldn't be confused with Farland Story Denki: Arc Ou no Ensei, which is also known as "Farland Story 2"). The game is set in the same time line as the second and the third "mainstream" Farland Story games, 20 years after Arc has become a king. Peace has returned to the world, but on the continent of Ionia, an emperor is plotting an evil scheme. His son Riad refuses to accept the methods of his father, especially when he wants to use Serena, a girl he loves, for his plans of war and conquest. During a quarrel, Riad attacks the emperor's minister, and is forced to flee the castle together with Serena. The adventure of the runaway prince begins... Graphically and gameplay-wise, the game is similar to other Farland Story games, although its setting is generally more dark. The game consists of large strategic battles, during which you move your party over the battle location, attacking enemies physically when they are in range of your weapons, and casting healing and offensive magic. Like in other Farland Story games, the death of the main character (Riad in this case) means instant Game Over.

Dragon Quest VI: Maboroshi no Daichi
Dragon Quest VI: Maboroshi no DaichiDragon Quest VI is the sixth installment in the Dragon Quest series. It is the penultimate title for the Nintendo Super Famicom as well as the last game in the Zenithia trilogy, and the first game in the series to be developed by Heartbeat, rather than Chunsoft. Like every other Dragon Quest game, the setting in Dragon Quest VI is very medieval, complete with castles, knights, and magic. The main world is divided into the Lower World and the Upper World, each with a separate but similar map. To get from one world to the other, the party uses special warps (such as in wells) or by ascending/descending colossal stairs on the world map.
