I'm surprised the legacy of Unholy Night: The Darkness Hunter isn't well known. But I guess I'll give an overview of the story.
Some ex-SNK employees wanted to make a Kickstarter for a new game with similar to previous arcade fighters. Unfortunately, the Kickstarter failed due to lack of promotion and was thought to be gone. Then a Chinese company got the rights and published the BETA version on the SNES console in 2017. The controls are still stiff and need balancing, but that could be fixed with a PC port (as I think the game would perfectly suit the power of a Sega Saturn-like controller.
I feel like GOG could finish the patching of the game and create a remaster, because it clearly has potential to be a full game. It does have the same charm and even though it's currently janky, (which could be fixed with some coding), I feel like this game could become a cult classic like King of Fighters and Darkstalkers.
Currently, the SNES cartridges are out of print and have become fairly expensive, particularly the European and Japanese copies. The USA copies are slightly cheaper, but their price tag is slowly increasing. Making harder for fighting game fans (particularly those who are good at patching and hacking games) to get ahold of.
I think this game does deserve a 2nd change at life on GOG. It is a project that got not enough promotion nor did it have a proper release (the current SNES version is clearly a Beta version and not the way the game intended to be released).
Anyway, my experiences with this game have been both on my YouTube channel and when I had a larger game collection before I unfortunately had to sell most of it for financial reasons. I played this game a lot whilst in college. Whilst it doesn't have the same polish as other fighters I have played, this game was still very fun to play. It reminded me of UNIB series, but with controls that were closer to KOF.
So let's give this game a second chance at life! You know what to do, folks! Let's share!
