eric5h5: It's simple enough to get a 10+TB hard drive for that; it's not like you need fast random access in this case. Not to mention that newer high-density SSDs are more prone to data loss after remaining unpowered for some time, which is kind of the opposite of what you want for backup purposes. Hard drives will also eventually suffer data degradation if unused for long periods of time but it usually takes a lot longer.
I expected myself to be moving between external and internal storage often since I currently uninstall and reinstall certain games due to mods. However, thinking about it this only applies to a few games I could keep on my PC anyways.

A few people have mentioned that I may as well go for a HDD.

So do I, I just find it funny that a number of us(including myself) buy/store hundreds of games yet hardly ever play them.

What do you mean? I play my old games all the time. Granted, I can only play one at a time, but it's certainly nice when I want to play one, to be able to open up my drive, find the game I want to play, and install it instantly from there.

These days, I primarily play my GOG games, since modern AAA games are appealing to me less and less these days, partly due to their DRM, and partly because I can't stand modern game design (as a general rule. There are exceptions).

Apologies for not being clear, I meant PC game players as a whole and not you specifically :)

I'm more or less like this as well. Older games (or modern lookalikes that are made well) just seem to have more appeal to me.

GilesHabibula: As soon as I can manage it though, I'll be picking up a second 18TB HDD to back up the first one. These drives aren't all that expensive, and it's well worth the cost to protect my relatively large investment purchasing all those games over the last 15 years here.
^ This is the way. In the very least back all your games up once, but it's better if you back them up twice. Consider also varying your serial number or brand just in case your first drive is a bad product or one of a bad batch.

You could in theory back up once on portable drives / SSDs and have the second copy backup one large external HDD.
The only thing I don't back up is very large games on Steam since it's a waste of time and discs.
I back up all the games I've paid for.

Only exceptions are some freebies I decided I'm never going to play anyway, so I've marked them "hidden" in my library.

FarklesDoggo: If us hoarders played games as well as we back stuff up, we'd finally make a noticeable dent in our backlogs :)
It is not my fault that buying games is much easier and less time consuming than actually playing them!

I just played a couple hours more of Planescape Torment EE. I just arrived to the Drowned Nations or what it is. I feel like I have played the game for ages already, but I am pretty sure I have only finished like 5% of it so far. I don't even have any other party members yet besides Morte and that fighter whose name eludes me.

Maybe I shouldn't play RPGs? Or watch a speedrun for this game, instead of playing it myself?

EDIT: I'm kinda impressed by myself for finishing all the Legacy of Kain/Soul Reaver games during 2023-2024, 5 games. That's one full series of games finished right there.

While watching a long play could be an option if you dislike the gameplay, I don’t think there is any enjoyment to get from discovering it through a speedrun.
Until recently I was only backing up a few of my games, due to space restrictions on my old gaming computer. After finally acquiring an external drive, I've started backing up all of them. Now I've run into the problem of not knowing whether the backed up files are good, though.

I recently had to re-download Tropico 4 because when I went to install it from my backed up files, the error-check prior to installation failed. I've never had that happen before, but now I'm wondering about the other games I've backed up but either not installed at all yet (Warcraft I and II), or currently have installed, but not from versions of the files I have backed up (Dragon Age Origins)...

I guess it's a good moment to mention the request to list checksums next to the downloads again.
I'd also link to wishlist entries, main one being https://www.gog.com/wishlist/site/my_account_provide_checksums_eg_md5_sha1_etc_for_downloadable_files but that's been there for 13 years and nothing's happening, though it's not like there's any real reason for GOG to not implement this.

Precisely. The community have already proven themselves that nabbing the checksums already available via the API is very doable. There is even a script available which does the job.

We just wish the site devs would spend that little extra time and implement this little QOL feature.

You didn't pick up the female tiefling? She's right outside the starting areas :D

Do like me and play a bunch of shorter/easier games to boost your numbers for more confidence!
I haven't made a habit of doing so.
If I should do it, I probably wouldn't need to.

As I was backing up some things in preparation for when I get my HDD, I ran into the same thought, lol. I'm going to have to test all of their installs before I move the files over. Thankfully the gog installer has an error message so that you don't load up a game to find out later it's broken.
