The very first game I ever bought on my own?
Pfft...no idea.
Seriously, that was so long ago...all I can say for sure, is that it was something for the C64.
All the conole games I played before that were gifts from my parents/family.

But I understand... games were expensive! And maybe you don't/didn't care about having a collection of old boxed games...
A couple of years ago, I bought a few a few original boxed versions of my favorite old games on ebay. They're still nice to have, but they don't have the same meaning as the ones I bought myself back in the day.

True, the boxes were never my main concern. I appreciate a good printed manual, but it's not a must. My family did not really understand or support gaming as a hobby, at least not paying money for it, so I was happy with anything I could get. My buying habits haven't really changed since then, I still prefer to buy games in that price range (up to 10 EUR), it's just that I buy *a lot* of these cheap games now, since I discovered GOG and switched to online payment for digital collections. I still have a few original boxes (bought on ebay) or budget edition CD and DVD cases in the cupboard, but I also gave away quite a few for free, sinc ethey just took up storage space.

My first games I owned were a hand me down Atari (can't remember what games beyond Caterpillar) and NES, both from a cousin I believe.

We used to rent NES games, not sure I ever actually bought any new, I certainly don't remember doing so.

Not sure if the N64 or my PC gaming came first, but even then a lot of games would have been bought for me as birthday or Christmas presents...

I'm struggling to remember games I actually bought myself to think what the earliest would have been. Looking at console release dates I would imagine I had a Game Boy before the N64 and probably bought N64 games before I started buying PC games.

So probably a Game Boy game might have been the first thing I bought with my own money... maybe Worms, Desert Strike, Star Wars... not sure which I would have bought myself and which I would have bought first..

I think it was 1982 and a bought an Atari 2600 on clearance for $40 and picked up Demon Attack for $5. I played that game for hours and hours in a single session trying to increase my score.

Gogo the ghost for the C64, fun game that i never completed but played a lot.

"Monty Python's Complete Waste of Time", followed by "FIFA Soccer Manager" and "Lands of Lore".

First game bought for me : Bio Menace

and I think the first game I bought with my own money, or at least the first one that I can remember: Civ 3.

It's possible I used my pocket money to buy some NES games, most likely
GI Joe and/or
TMNT3

Maybe Wolfenstein 3D or Pool of Radiance

Pong.. And I still have it. And it STILL WORKS. (Or at least it did the last time I hooked it up a couple of years ago.

Gawd that first day me, my parents, and my aunt and uncle and two cousins were up ALL NIGHT playing that game. lol. And I totally RULED. Nobody would even play me unless I played with my left hand (I'm right handed and the thing about that game was that the buttons were situated so that someone always had to play with their left hand or they had to sit sort of turned away from the TV).

I still ruled. Left handed. My uncle got so mad he called me names I had never heard before that night. lol Of course back then my arms and legs worked. Not so anymore.

The first console games I owned were the Super Mario Bros./Duck Hunt cart that came with the NES and Zelda 2. (I wanted Zelda 1, but now I like Zelda 2 better.)

Before then, my family owned some computer games, but I didn't really play them (though I remember watching my mother play Bard's Tale).
