Ueber: Since years, most of my decisions to buy a video game are based on YouTube review/Gameplay and reddit's r/shouldibuythisgame, r/patientgamer and r/truegaming.

§pectre: but people shouldn't have to.

The reviews should gives someone a vague idea of what the game is about. Unfortunately even some games have misleading promotional pictures etc so you can't trust them and gog is also at fault for allowing it.
Yes I agree. Although it works, you should get the first impression on the page where you actually buy something.

teceem: I've never heard of this "there was no 0-3".

PetrusOctavianus: Heh, that reminds me of TES Nexus, where the mentally challenged persons in charge had a 1-10 scale for rating mods, but if you voted below 5 the mentally challenged persons would ban you.
ah the egoistic mods
I do not like the system as non-owners can also write reviews and even give the stars. Also the overall ranking consists of owners' ratings and non-owners' rating put together which is an absolute madness....

timppu: There is the cultural effect as well. I don't know about other countries, but when people here think about the "10 star rating system", they are thinking of their school times where everything was rated between 4 to 10 (there was no 0-3).

Maybe it is a Finnish thing.

Or at least it was back when I was at school, no idea what kind of rating systems schools of today have. For all I know, nowadays they probably have different kind of smileys. :D = excellent, :) is good, :| is average, :( is poor, :-o is failed etc.

However, universities and such had a different rating system, 0-5 IIRC. So the 4-10 rating system was specifically from primary schools to high schools etc.

I mean it sounds like the A, B, C, D, F system that was used in schools.
GOG reviews are bottom of the barrel stuff most of the time. I attribute it to the impossibility of editing the review. Most people who like reviewing games aren't professional writers, they scribble something and then read it and edit to improve it. You can't do that on GOG.

BUT if you guys want to read some fascinating reviews, check out the review tab in HowLongToBeat.com. I bet most people who use the site isn't even aware they exist. It's the most wonderfully random stuff.
It helps to filter em.

There's some bad and uninformative reviews, but I usually find at least one or two useful ones. Sure, that ratio is not particularily good.

It's pretty bad and sad that people use reviews to insult or backstab previous reviewers simply because they have a different opinion of the game, if this opinion is presented in a coherent and informative manner (i.e. is more than just superlatives).

When I look at reviews I'm not looking at the scoring, it doesn't mean anything to me because scores are even more subjective and abstract than written words; what does a "2" mean to this person?.

I think having an expanded form system would be better, where you have to fill in: what was good, what was bad, how was the technical performance, etc, and then a textbox at the end where you can write freely.

That thread was a trainwreck from the start, and I doubt it would have gotten past 5 posts on most other forums before getting shot down.
