As far as roguelikes go my main favorites are still DoomRL (now with actual graphics :D) and Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup also with graphics but hard as hell...and very addicting :D.

I second, or is that third by now:P,the La-Mulana recommendation as that captures the very essence of a Metroidvania: run around looking for power-ups that will help you advance to the next section. Be warned that the clues the game gives you are rather...obscure at times :D.

I can also recommend UnEpic as far as Metroidvanias go. Only problem I have with it is that the graphics are tiny and I can't find a way to stretch them :D.

As far as roguelikes go, I have to recommend Sword of the Stars: The Pit. It's got all of the elements of a classic roguelike: YASD (yet another stupid death :D), proper turn-based movement and combat, randomization, tons of skills that are also affected by your primary stats, etc. And yes, you can get it here :P

On the metroidvania front, I have to update my impressions about Unepic now that I got to play the latest version (1.42.3). The graphics are no longer too tiny to see as the game supports just about every resolution under the sun. I am playing it right now at 1900 x 1200 and it looks AWESOME. The GOG shirt and the Classic Controller (mace) are also nice goodies to have :D.

Here's a roguelike for those of you with kids. It's called Crayon Chronicles and it's actually quite complex once you look past the surface. You have some decent customization options: you can customize the three friends you have to rescue, your catch phrase, how your character looks and more. Gameplay is as follows: turn-based combat? Yep, it's there :D. Stats? Sure, there's only 4 of them but you get a chance to pick the two you want to upgrade at level up. Randomization? Yes! Basically, if you want to introduce your child to gaming and not worry about gory violence or bad language, then I can't think of a better game.

I have also taken the liberty to edit the thread title because the misspelling of rogue into rouge just drives me nuts. Sorry OP.

fortune_p_dawg: Honestly that looks like something I'd enjoy. Is it DRM-free? I couldn't find anything on the site stating whether it is or isn't.
If you're talking about Crayon Chronicles then the only thing that resembles DRM is the one-time activation code you enter to unlock the full version from the demo. I've seen worse DRM :D

Leroux: Crayon Chronicles looks awesome, and it's cheap on top of it. :D The website says you get a registration code if you purchase it - do you happen to know if the activation is DRM-free/offline (like Shareware and CD keys used to work) or online (like SecuRom)?

EDIT: Whoops, I've never been ninja'd this badly before - I should probably have refreshed the page before posting ... XD I'm still interested to know if the one-time activation is on- or offline though (and would it work with each new installation?).
When I was activating the game I don't recall it telling me that I needed to be online but I am not 100% sure as it's been a while since I activated the game. I can tell you one thing: Windows Firewall didn't pop up asking if I wanted Crayon Chronicles to have access to the internet so take that as you will :D.

fortune_p_dawg: Is it an on-line or off-line activation?
Like I said, I was online but I don't recall the game calling home or prompting me that I need to be online. Keep in mind that it's been a while since I activated it :D

Nirth: Interesting. Can anyone recommend anything from there? I prefer more of the Metroidvania kind and less roguelike (RPG and items rather than hard challenge)

I noticed they promoted Valdis Story, I think the release is quite close now.
I played the demo of Rogue Legacy and found it to be all kinds of awesome. I really enjoy the family line aspect of the game plus you can build your castle up, customize your dude/dudette with a bunch of runes, unlock all sorts of classes. And the game has superb controller support.

Another one I can recommend is Unepic especially since it too just got some kick butt controller support and Francisco, the dev, is constantly working on improving the game. The graphics, to me, are unique, tons of loot (and yes, our version has some GOG-related swag in the game :D), cool boss fights. Just don't ask Telika, one of our forum goers about one of them :D.
