Does it delete the thread after a certain number of reports?? Or does the disappearance of a thread necessarily mean that a blue must have deleted it?

Several threads have been vanishing into thin air as of late. So I'm wondering whether its report trolls or some out of control moderation?

Yes, a certain number (I don't know what it is, but it's not terribly high -- low double digits at most) of spam reports on the first post of a topic will auto-delete that topic. The potential (and sometimes actual) abuse of this has long been a problem. It's also one of the many things about the forum software that I don't think they can figure out how to change now without completely breaking everything.
But moderators in recent months have also been more active in locking and/or deleting duplicate threads and potentially incendiary threads, in addition to obvious spam and troll threads.

The Pharaoh decides to take a walk to the valley and check on the construction of his pyramid.

He gets to the site and sees thousands of laborers digging this massive hole in the ground.

Immediately he runs over to the edge of the hole and starts screaming, "Stop digging! You've got the blueprints upside down!"
