So back in the 90s I believe it was, I remember seeing this game in the pc gaming magazines with some prominently featured character with a proper dark moustache . I mean a real manly Tom Selleck type moustache . Looked like a military type person. For years I thought it was Gorky 17, but now that I've looked at the game more closely, and even given it a testrun, I don't see such a character.
So I think this must've been a similarly isometric rpg type game with vaguely similar look that came out at roughly the same time.

Any idea what I'm thinking of?

The moustachest moustache of PC gaming was Soldier of Fortune's moustache. It didn't get moustacher than that.

But it's a FPS.

Or that guy from the first Modern Warfare who, come to think of it, looks a lot like the guy from Soldier of Fortune...
But no, it definitely was some sort of top-down isometric game, or at a stretch, something like Anachronox.

The mustache I remember was more, well, bushy than that :) But it was definitely some sort of isometric adventure or action/adventure game where you could clearly make out the 3d models of the characters. Sort of similar to Gorky 17

You've got a wide variety of portraits available in Jagged Alliance 2 (or 1 for that matter), could it have been one of those?

Not JA2 no, it was definitely 3D models and you could see the mustache on the character model. Might also have been tactical combat like JA2, but my recollection of the screenshots left me with the impression that it is an adventure game.

Off the top of my head, the only mustache I remember, other than Mario, is Mike Haggar from Final Fight.
