They haven't caught on with the public; I wouldn't say gaming is considered mainstream in any country. Its still considered niche and in countries like mine, immature. Hopefully, it stays that way. I can't imagine what shit would be produced when they have to cater to that many people. I cringe at the thought.
I can't think of any reality in which gaming isn't present. Without the advent of computer and console games, definitely more gambling places.
What else, chess as an Olympic sport?
Presently we have nothing that could be the next paradigm changer in computing if the computer industry were still only utilized by business and governments, and home computing never happened.
From what I remember of my history, home computers were only offered once they got small enough to fit on a table. Perhaps if governments banned them from home use fearing their power and kept the advances strictly in-house, then such a state might exist. I do think that such a government would see the tracking capabilities of a personal computer at some point though. They retain the monopoly on technology and manufacture. Then every "mini-puter" will come preloaded with tracking software of every kind.
Paradigm change of personal computers would come about when they could be sufficiently miniaturized to be carried by everyone - smartphone or a phablet size. Country-wide rollout proceeds and everyone could then be tracked in real-time.
At which point computer games become a thing again. But probably more casual games as the point would be that everyone would have one on their person, rather than sitting back and playing Starcraft in a room.

The big question is would the internet have happened and become the world-wide ubiquitous thing it is today without the advent of home computing? No users would mean no usenet, no geocities, no AOL, no Apple, no Microsoft, etc. That would also mean information would not be free to be easily disseminated. If no one knows of events, they can't protest about them. They can't rally. It remains an uphill struggle to make big corporations and governments listen and change. Would there be any semblance of a global society without the internet? Connection is what makes people see each other as human. If there's no connection, it makes it easier to go to war on them. Easier to be suspicious of the "other".
Although, it would also mean no Facebook. :P
I'd still be programming my own like in the c64 days. Had fun then, would keep having fun now. And all you suckers would be reading or something.
If perogies had never been invented, would The Witcher 3 have ever come to exist? What about GOG.com? Feel free to use chaos theory in your answers!

KiNgBrAdLeY7: LoL? Some gamers have sex or are being sexy, while gaming and broadcasting live, all at the same time! Especially of the current generation teen... Completely invalid your statement, is...
Do you feel sexy when you are gaming? Do you touch yourself "there" when you "do it" (play a game)? Uuuh...

No, but i sure as hell love watching gamergirls do that while broadcasting.
I definitely think you should have your own gaming channel. I bet you are superhot and sexy when you play a game, especially if it is an RPG. Strategy games, maybe not as much, but still hot.

I had a channel on certain social media before, but they updated them and turned them into applications for mobiles only... Ever since then, i can only emulate, stalk and lurk... But i get myself lots of (eye)"candy"! And as i said, those "gamergirls"... MEOW, ROAR!!!

Double RAWR when they cosplay, too... I love "technology" now; horns for everyone, hornies everywhere, NYAAA!

Best gamergirls are those who own a cat and a cactus, though. And this is fact! I <3 adorable petite girls with cats and cactuses, who also are into gaming... I even reconsidered about steam, some of those naughty little mermaids have active steam accounts as well, purrr
