Breja: Because jRPGs have no class. >rimshot<
More like a slam dunk followed by an over-the-top celebratory dance while the crowd cheers through the victory music :)

Hawk52: Because in most jRPG's the main character is supposed to be some type of destined heroic figure or filling a specific role within the story that requires the character to play a certain way. The best example of this would be Cecil from FF4. You start off as a Dark Knight who through the story is "reborn" as a Paladin to right the wrongs you've helped create.

A jRPG is usually more like an interactive story where you follow the story elements towards the end of the narrative rather then having control the decide the narrative yourself.
Right the wrongs you've created by killing thousands of creatures! No blood on his hands as a holy paladin!

The fact that we've seen the same tired tropes since Final Fantasy IV is a bit of an issue.
OK, I managed to stay away for a whole day but I just can't. The setup is too good. So the answer is really this:

While most western RPGs are classics, most JRPGs are just not classy.

*drum roll*

Sarisio: OP definitely didn't play many JRPGs :)

Maxvorstadt: Well, JRPGs are less about customization, more about a the story and obeying to the rules of the world.

Sarisio: You also definitely didn't play many JRPGs :)
I have but I havent beaten many :) I usually have a greater chance in managing to beat a western rpg then a Jrpg. I only beat like 5 Jrpgs which isnt a lot as there are literally 1000s on pc. If you count winter wolves jrpgs then I beat 8 ;)

I don't see how following the same formula of one of the greatest games of all time is a bad thing.

*Snort!*

Final Fantasy IV was melodramatic as all get out! Graphically, musically, and thematically I would hardly call it even the best RPG for its year. I realize that there was only one other thing close to an RPG in 1991 on the SNES, (Actraiser) and it did introduce a then revolutionary system of a counter ticking while you chose things and this is all just opinion but surely Mother 1, Secret of Mana, and others would be a candidate above it for 'best RPG', or even 'Greatest Game'.

It simply hasn't aged well and the DS remake isn't looking any younger either.
