As I've got ads on youtube on my tablet, it has at least the merit to keep informed of what's going in the entertainement industry (yeah, there's this thing called Star Wars coming soon, I know....) but unexpectedly, I got to see the XCOM2 trailerthis morning and instead of skipping it, I let it play because it felt so much like an AAA parody that I was constantly rolling eyes at 200% full cliché it was. Here it is for those we missed it:

As I'm old enough to have played a lot the original XCOM when it was released and I have much fond memories of it, I just feel like this trailer raped my youth and buried it under a pile of crap, I don't even care anymore if the game is good or not but with such marketing communication, I'm pretty sure I will never buy it.... Time to finally play this Xenonauts game which has been gathering dust in my library....
I did play those old XCOMs, and I don't have the guts to replay them again. Graphics are awful enough.

XCOM 2 will be so good.

Ignore the marketing, if the material is good, why not?
Trailer is horrible, luckily I don't care about trailers.
Trailers never do anything for me, I'll just wait for the game itself.
The 'first' one was pretty good, so hopefully this one will be as well.
I tried Xenonauts and didn't like it BTW.
It's the voiceover. It sounds like someone trying waaaaaaay too hard to be Don LaFontaine-epic while they have a cold.

So I'm not the only one. Have always been a fan of XCOM series, and Xenonauts doesn't even interest me in the slightest, despite it's being marketed as XCOM successor. It just... doesn't have the weight as such.

Xenonauts NEEDS the community edition mod if you want it good.

THe XCOM gameplay might be good, just don't mind the promo shit, it's meant for young people of the COD MW generation
it looks like a comic?

What do you think of movie trailers in general?. ie Star Wars Force Awakens, Civil War etc?
Yeah, that trailer is pretty terrible. But XCOM (2012) was an excellent game and pretty faithful to the original X-COM games from the 90s, so I'm optimistic about XCOM 2.
Other than the incredibly cheesy narrative, I thought the trailer was fine. I guess I've watched too many "Honest Trailers", which is probably the sole reason why the narrative can't really be taken seriously.

Anyway, it was Angry Joe's 40-minute gameplay video that personally got me excited for this game. XCOM: EU was incredible, I have no reason to believe this won't be too.
So... another short trailer for a video game that shows absolutely no actual video game footage. What's new. The hype train has no brakes. You know what I miss? Video game trailers that show actual game footage with a voice offering up a few features that are going to be in the actual game that I will be playing. I know, crazy idea...

I post this trailer for Ageod's new Wars of Napoleon as a comparison.

That's how you make a game trailer. By the end of that 1 and half minute trailer you get thunderous classical music, a little bombastic hype, and some footage from the game offering up what's actually involved in the gameplay. That XCOM 2 trailer just made me think some new crappy animated show is about to debut on the cartoon network. There is so much detachment now between the hype train and the gravy train they might as well not even be on the same track any more.
I think that trailer was kinda... ok, maybe a bit boring and cliched as you said. For some reason it reminded me a bit of the Shattered Steel intro (available in GOG).

Anyway, this XCOM2 gameplay video should win you over:

The trailer doesn't bother me. People are just wearing nolstagia goggles, causing them to forget things like classic X-COM's intro cutscenes.

X-COM: Opening Movies
If you've watched Honest Trailers (same guy, apparently) it’s difficult to separate that voice. I wouldn't put so much stock in marketing though, it’s just a short trailer to appeal to as many people as possible and doesn't necessarily reflect the tone of the game. A character from the Witcher 3 made fun of their ‘Killing Monsters’ trailer, and Dragon Age: Origins was nothing like the Marilyn Manson trailer.

Can't comment on the OP since his reservations remain unexplained, but that did happen a lot during the build-up to Enemy Unknown (2012). One of the weirdest complaints which kept popping up was that it was 'too colourful for X-Com.'
