I remember playing the shareware demo, and it played kinda like "Whales Voyage" (the first person bits) in that you fought in some areas and socialized with NPCs in other areas. It was made in part by Rogue Entertainment, who went on to make a bunch of Quake and Quake II packs, and were in the process of making a Counter Strike pack when Valve told them to stop, at which point they disbanded.

Qbix: Please don't make generic topics into questions which need to be solved....
While on topic. I never played it. Heard good thing about it though.

Please don't rent-a-mod.
Besides it was a mistake, I had just created a valid "question that needed to be solved" and ticking boxes can be habit-forming.

Red_Avatar: Great game but flawed. Sometimes the guards would come or the alarm would go off without you understanding why.

drmlessgames: The alarms would go off if you attacked with any weapons besides the light crossbow or the dagger, which are the weapons that dont make noise.

Just a few problems there:
a) even the crossbow will set off the alarm sometimes
b) some sections let you kill as much as you want, others raise the alarm. You then return to town to find soldiers spawning all over.
c) sometimes I've had the alarm being raised without using ANY weapon.
It's a dangerous system if it doesn't work in an obvious sense. A small icon to warn that you should make a noise would have gone a long way.
I have it and it played fine while I was on XP but for some reason when I upgraded to 7 it bsoded me every time I tried to play, needless to say I don't try to play it anymore.
I was running it under Zdoom.

Try gzdoom. :D
Apparently Rogue Entertainment lost the source code to Strife, so it would seem getting ahold of an intact, original version through GoG would be impossible anyway. There are, however, at least two game engine recreations out there, one incorporated into ZDoom, and the other called SvStrife.
Unfortunately, neither of these contain the commercial Strife IWAD files, as far as I know, so basically they're just guns without ammunition.

Erm why would GOG need the source code of Strife? Do you expect GOG to recode the game? Just get the CD version if you want an "intact and original" version. It works fine in DOSBox so no reason why they'd need anything but a copy of the CD.
Still, great game for its time compared to all the repetitive maze corridor shooters.
My dad got it for me for Christmas and I had no idea what the game was, and was kind of wary about it. That was before I played it. While I never beat the game, I found it to be an awesome blend of RPG and action. I'm pretty sure I have the CD still lying around here.
