I remember playing the shareware demo, and it played kinda like "Whales Voyage" (the first person bits) in that you fought in some areas and socialized with NPCs in other areas. It was made in part by Rogue Entertainment, who went on to make a bunch of Quake and Quake II packs, and were in the process of making a Counter Strike pack when Valve told them to stop, at which point they disbanded.

Hello, I own the full cd version. It's a first person shooter using the doom engine with light RPG elements, a nice game, but very difficult compared to other FPS. The graphics and music are nice and you can solve simple side quest and the not so simple main one. In fact this one is a lot more complex and time consuming.
It works great on WinXP with Dosbox.
Bye.
Yeah, and it was one of the rare "What you do now will have future repercussions" games, with at least three different endings.

You can play Strife with a modern source port like ZDOOM. Mouslook and WASD make this game a lot easier :)

Strife was great. I really hope someone will do a modern remake, or a successor - Starbreeze seems to be the perfect developer to do it, since Riddick's gameplay mechanics remind me a lot of Strife's. The RPG-lite aspect isn't too complex, i.e. there's a simple inventory system, and you get to do some trading, and at it's core it is still more of a first person shooter than an RPG.
Strife was a great game, what more can be said? I really hope GOG gets this one at some point, because it's well worth a look even today.

Yeah, strife was awesome. It was half life before half life. Sucks that it's old technology got it ignored. Gog should get it, but who they should ask about it is unknown.

Maybe iD? I mean, Rogue Entertainment was practically in the same building with them, and Tim Willits was on the design team for it.

drmlessgames: Nah, not likely at all, since some years back someone actually emailed them about it. And they replied that they didnt know who. I would like to find out who does, this game deserves a new release. Both them the developers and Velocity, their publisher went bust, and their catalog wasnt bought by anyone apparently.

I don't know about that. Strife gave you nearly complete freedom, as well as lots of interaction and problem-solving and many characters with substantial conversation. In Half-Life you walk along a linear path doing nothing other than shooting enemies who spawn in front of you until you reach the end of the game. Half-Life has nothing on Strife (well, aside from mouselook).
(apologies to Half-Life fans, but I'm not one of you)
I would love for this game to come out on GOG. I played a demo/shareware-version back when it was new, and really liked it, but could never find it.
I'll have to check if I've voted for it on the wishlist or not... (yeah, I know, the wishlist is useless. but still)

Well, by that I meant that all the praise and accolades Half life got should have gone to Strife instead. Half life wasn't a GOTY game, Strife was. I would say Half life ripped off Strife a lot. HL is overrated.

Please don't make generic topics into questions which need to be solved....
While on topic. I never played it. Heard good thing about it though.

Great game but flawed. Sometimes the guards would come or the alarm would go off without you understanding why.

The alarms would go off if you attacked with any weapons besides the light crossbow or the dagger, which are the weapons that dont make noise.
