langurmonkey: I foolishly purchased Saints Row 2 some time ago. The cars move too fast, you have to be Data from Star Trek TNG in order to drive and the game is choppy inside buildings. Horrible port.
Three links of value, in order of importance (that is, read the first one first):

Thanks.
I couldn't tell you much about SR2, but here's a link if you end up getting the PC version, which I've heard is particularly bad: pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Saints_Row_2

I loved Saints Row III. Plus the PC version ain't that bad.

The cars are not supposed to go that fast. And if you play with a friend who has a different processor than you, that person will move at a different speed. This by the way includes all in-game timers, so the person with the faster processor will see his/her in-game timer move faster, which means that you can fail timed missions, even if it looks like you have plenty of time to spare. read this post for more info on how to solve it.

*edit* ninja'd by an hour. I should not leave my browser open while doing something else, and then go back to answer a post..

Dunno about second game as I never could get it to actually work properly on PC, but the third one ... You get a gun which shoots sharks out of the ground. I... Just... Get the game.
Maybe I'm lucky, but I don't seem to have any real issues with SR2 PC (I've played it a few hours so far). My CPU is Intel Core i7-3610QM 2.30GHz, playing at 1920x1080 with almost everything at max.

I did see in e.g. Youtube some people having severe framerate issues while driving, but I haven't seen that either. Maybe I'll still give the unofficial patches a try, just to see if they matter to me.

EDIT: Ok if it may affect some timed missions, that is certainly bad.

EDIT2: Reading the Steam forum discussion, maybe this is the reason I don't see the speed issues then:

How can I fix Saints Row 2 running too fast at 1.5x speed?

IMPORTANT! Many players have reported that the speedup bug is now fixed with Windows 8, and Minimaul confirmed it as well on his test box! DO NOT USE POWERTOOLS OR CHEAT ENGINE IF YOU HAVE WINDOWS 8!

The speedup bug is something that is an inherent problem with Windows 7, though in rare cases it has been reported to happen on Vista. The speedup happens with CPUs that do not run at exactly 3.2Ghz frequency (the Xbox 360 cpu speed.) The further your cpu is away from 3.2Ghz (both higher and lower) the faster it will run.
Well, as a matter of fact, I am indeedy playing it in Windows 8. Interesting, it works better on Win8...? Maybe I'll try it on Windows 7 too, just to see what people are complaining about.

I loved SR3. It has some issues, not very well optimized, but loads of fun.
i loved saints row 3, it was a hell of a lot of fun, and i was never bored. conversely i recently tried playing gta 4 and was bored out of my mind... boring combat, boring driving, no colour or variety, boring characters and stories... everything was a blast on sr3, customisation was great fun, the characters were wacky and the missions were very enjoyable... BRING ON SR4!!!

GTA4 was awful. Especially the gameplay. SR3 is Soooooo much better.

JCD-Bionicman: Heard it was shorter. As far as the dumb little gripes to do with having tank destruction instead of septic assault or whatever I could give a shit less.

So it's supposedly shorter, more expensive than the now marked down Saints Row 2, and they took away some player choice or something. That's all I really care about, I could care less about the "shift in tone" that critics sometimes complain about, because while the 3rd may be more over the top, it's always been a batshit crazy game from what I can tell.

So the question is, what do you guys think of SR3? Should I start with 2 or 3?
I would start with Saints 2. In my opinion they're both very good, extremely fun games. They're even more fun if you can find a friend to co op with. The shit you can get upto is unreal.
PC version of SR3 is damn well optimised, smooth and really ridiculous fun. It's probably my game of the year for 2011.
This kinda sums it up for me:

So is the consensus about Saints Row 2 PC now that:

- If you have Windows 7, forget it! It is horrible! Or at least you'll need to install some third-party fan fixes to make it anywhere near playable!

- If you have Windows 8, go for it, it is (probably) fine.

Or does someone still have serious problems with the game in Win8? As said, SR2 seems to run and play fine on my Win8 system, and the reports indicate that for some odd reason the speed problems happen only on Win7, and sometimes in Vista.

(I didn't yet try to run it in Win7.)

Pretty sure SR2 works great with the fan fix. Not sure why it would be a big deal to use that, why pretend the fix does not exist?

Though honestly SR3 is the game to play, the first two were rough around the edges and bland.
Having played both SR2 and SR3 (both on Windows7 64bit), I can say that...
Both are great!

Although it took me a while to get SR2 running (at first it was almost unplayable: walking was just about okay, but driving was a nightmare, due to lagging), after I did get it running it was a blast. Can't really remember how I got it working, but the solution is out there somewhere on the internet.

SR3 just works and is a lot of fun. You can't really go wrong there, although maybe SR2 is the better game (if you can get it to run, which shouldn't be too hard).
One of the major gripes against modern gaming is that it's more about being cinematic and less about being an actual game. Of all the triple A games in recent years, Saints Row The Third is the best at being a game. As a result it's one of the best games in recent years. It's more generous than any other game I've played. Far from putting up walls to stop you doing cool stuff, it breaks a few the more fundamental ones down for you. Any complaints levelled against the length of the game surely must just be down to the fact that it could not be long enough for you to feel you've had enough of it.
