Wishbone: Yes, for retail-bought Valve games. Nothing else. And I'm not happy about it.
Well, you'd use Origin, for EA games. Nothing else. You'd not be happy about it.

That'd be two mandatory third-party clients instead of one. I'm unhappy about having even one. I'd be extremely unhappy about having two.

At least with Origin it never has to be running.

Side note: It's a shame I can't talk about this awesome fucking game.
It sucks my Laptop sucks so much so can't alpha test, but here's hoping when they open the Beta I'll get a ps3 beta slot. Was fun when I beta tested MoH, made it fun knowing the maps etc when it fully released xD was nice to be epic for a while lol shame that the game got stale fast.

Also I know I technically may have gone against the NDA by making this topic and posting the FAQ but generating more interest and allowing people to know a way to possibly get an alpha invite I think should be fine, right? >_>

1. Install Battlefield 3
2. Uninstall Origin
3. ????
4. Profit!

You'll need it if you want automatic updates... But EA always releases patches for offline use too, so its not a big deal.

Well if someone absolutely cannot stand the idea of an EA downloader being on their system then manually updating should be expected.
Is Origin even required for retail copies? It says EA account required on game boxes now yet making an account was still optional. It's a multiplayer game but say in Mirror's Edge you could login from within the game to download time trial steps.

Purely a guess but it's likely the Origin requirement is simply to download the BF3 Alpha. It is closed afterall so where else would you get it from?

I know but it was in response to Wishbone who has already sworn off the final game thinking it's set in stone that Origin will be needed when the game goes gold. Maybe it will, but maybe it won't.

Dragon Age 2 and Alice 2 retail copies tie to an EA account and Origin but you never have to start the program. That's why it's awesome.

I wouldn't say awesome but it would be nice if steam did the same thing.

Downloading Battlefield 3 Alpha now! I just got invited to the ALPHA!
I got in too, seems as though it ends the 2nd or something(at least someone mentioned it on their forums)....
This Alpha is just fracking awesome ! Too bad we can't say much about it because of the strict NDA. But it will blow the fuck up of MW3 ! Definitely !
