But as far as the iPhone, that is basically it. It becomes a matter of what the dev wants. But if someone was shooting for the PSN store and the iPhone app store, Facebook isn't that big of a deal. Instead, the dev (and a lot of people) attach an unfair stigma to that.
Just saying, that plus actually posting this crap (which I would be surprised if half of those were actual quotes) makes me see the dev as an arrogant jerk.

Maybe, but either way, it isn't fair to call out the publisher on that one either.
Their job is to get the maximum return for their investment. This game would be PERFECT for social network oriented stuff (pretty sure Facebook can have flash games, but I barely use the thing, so who knows), and both he and the publisher would benefit greatly from the huge audience. But pride goeth before a fall.

Well, it's fair to either call them both out (and the culture) or neither, yes. Facebook thrives with Flash games. In fact, I'm not sure they can support alternative technologies like HTML5, but that's not really my market, so I don't know.
Of course, the problem with games in general is that you need to break into the market before you see good returns. It's easy to get lost into the app store or Facebook abyss. At least with releasing on console/PC DD services you tend to get some free advertising.

That is actually why I say this looks like the perfect Facebook app for "gamers". Judging by the wiki article, it involves getting high scores (like Trials). As ANYONE who has used Facebook can attest, it is hard to ignore all those updates about Farmville and the like (at least, until you disable them :p). That right there is massive advertising, and probably better than the PSN can ever give you.
Now, I am not saying the guy should have completely abandoned consoles or PCs. But the capital this would provide combined with exposure ("From the same people who brought you that game you have been playing every time your boss's back was turned for the past year!") would probably have benefited quite a bit.
But I think we are a bit off topic :p

The notifications that the apps give are great advertising, you are correct, but the problem is that the Facebook app needs to reach critical mass before that helps you. If no one's using your app, no one else gets notifications. If 1,000,000 people use your apps 1,000,000 * avgFriends get notifications. Facebook advertising is a feedback loop, and it only significantly helps you when you reach a certain amount of users.
But yes, a bit off topic.

Yeah, but this game is targeted toward "gamers". So one or two interviews at the major sites (RPS, Destructoid, Kotaku, etc) and you get your seed. You might not have "critical mass", but gamers are friends with gamers. So you still get it spread. Almost forced word of mouth.

This reminds me of my latest issue of Game Developer Magazine (I know right). The last page, the funny column is a piece about some guys creating a chess game, and the publishers responding with suggestions. With airstrikes (the pawns would feel empowered), perks, 16-player multiplayer gameplay, and removing the queen, and if I remember correctly, a spy piece.
Aaah, got it. Both parts, people.

...
"Our focus group had no idea who the white king was, why they were fighting him, and so on."
"Now, move that rook, recruit!"
"Some quick ideas, Wizard, Hydra, Slime Monster."
"everyone seems to concur that pawns are vastly underpowered."
"We'd suggest giving them some interesting abilities to compensate, such as the power to call in air strikes. Our focus groups really felt that ability in MODERN WARFARE 2 resonated with their core synergies."
", like some kind of survival mode where enemy chess pieces constantly spawn that you have to fend off".
"We really need to up the ambience here, with raining arrows, fire, explosions in the distance, and so on."
"I'd suggest getting some normal maps in there, take a look at games like GEARS OF WAR or UNCHARTED 2 and I think you'll see what I mean."
", and the nipples underneath the fabric of the queen's dress."
I mean, this has to be a joke. Right? If it isn't, and if I was a struggling developer receiving that kind of reply ... I'd probably kill myself. There's just no hope for the world any longer.
