Ghorpm: Is that a threat? ;) The funny thing is that I'm not quite sure whether you are trying to convince me to buy the game or the opposite... both theories sound equally probable

PLEASE don't say anything about money, ok? I'm confused and tired not a simpleton. I perfectly know that I can afford it and I won't regret spending just three dollars. It's not the point!
It's made by Sid Meier and you say you're a Civ fan. Why would this be complicated?

F1ach: In Lost in Space, the Smith Family were heading to Alpha Centauri, if that doesnt make you want to go there, you are a luddite and should stick to earth based games :)
LOL. Between this and the licking, I think it's a must-buy.
Alpha Centauri takes Civ II and expands it with some really neat features. Like regarding units, where you can combine techs and make up your own units, or superunits. And with tile improvements, they took advantage of the sci fi setting to do what they eventually did with Civ IV, add a tile improvement for commerce.

The AI is sharper, the Diplomacy was really upgraded, and with it all they added an ongoing "story" to the game where you get more and more "in tune" with the new planet you're on and when you take all of those things together what it means is if you're a fan of Civilization II, III, and IV, then you'll definitely LOVE SMAC.

However, because of all of it's new features, there is some more learning to do. I used to have set strategies on setting cities in II and III (and to a lesser extent IV) and thos strategies had to be thrown out the window and completely relearned for this one.

For example, there are ways to get resources for your city without workers. Lots of ways. If you've ever felt you had the right "mix" between food and commerce and production figured out in Civ II, III, or IV, they have to be completely relearned here because with those features, it's almost limitless what you can do with cities (or sort of, the unhappiness levels will keep you in check).

Anyway, it's sort of like Civ II on steroids, with better AI, better diplomacy, much more challenging barbarians (here they're called mind worms and stuff like that and they will mess you well into the game unlike others in the series), and way, way more options.

I won't go into the expansion, because that's currently not offered here and there's definitely two schoools of thought on that. One decidedly positive, one negative.

In short, if you enjoyed Civ II, and Civ IV (without the resources but with way more other new options) then I think you'll love SMAC. Once you've played through a couple of times and get a feel for all the changes.

EDIT: Oops, TLTR. I'm bad about that.

i love gog :)
I don't have Alpha Centauri (but it's on my wishlist), so I can't speak from personal experience.

From what I've read it is based on the Civ 2 engine, but with many changes besides the obvious setting change. It is a darker game than the other Civs, which might put another interesting spin on things in addition to being futuristic. Even though it's based on the Civ 2 engine, I've also read that it's game play is ahead of Civ 3 and I liked Civ 3 a hug lot, so that sounds intriguing.

I've never played Civ 2, but I've enjoyed 3 and 4. I say give it a shot and see what you think.

EDIT:
Well, it looks like mistermumbles has solved your dilemma. :)

macuahuitlgog: For $3 you can buy a game that lets you use planet buster weapons that can cause global warming and make everyone hate you including the native lifeforms. For $3 you can buy a game that lets you conduct genetic warfare. For $3 you can buy a game that lets you play as futuristic Spartans. This list can go on and on. Basically you can be as evil as you want, good as you want or in between. You have a lot of very very different interesting factions to choose from too. There is a lot of freedom in this good very original game.
Can I be a truly evil, iron-fisted dictator in this game? Yes, yes there is Dungeon Keeper but I want something a biiiiit more sophisticated :monocle:
YOU CAN STOP POSTING!

I'm fully convinced or actually forced to be convinced:
