xyem, i don't quite understand the "mask" part on your 3rd clue. Is that some sort of idiom or metaphor?

It's always like that with these things though - when I find out what the solution is I'm alway SO close but for some detail I would never have thought of in a million years!

I'm a computer geek. A class of character is like.. alpha, numeric, whitespace, punctuation etc.
