Hey everyone! I'm a young gamer (14 years of age) and I plan on making my own Let's Plays in hopes to become a YouTube Partner to make more money for games and then playing those games for more money, so on and so forth.

I'm not asking for views: I haven't made a video yet, actually. But I need advice on games first, I really want to do Thief 3: Deadly Shadows and then Fallout: Tactics. Would these be good choices for let's plays? Would you watch them, knowing I'm 14 years old? Please reply!

P.S. I'm reading the Fallout: Tactics page, and I see multiplayer options. Does this mean I can play the missions with my friends as squad mates? If so, would you watch the video if I were playing with a group of (mainly mature) 14 year olds?
It's all about how good they are. If you make great Let's Plays, you'll have some sort of audience. It may not be huge. Main thing is to be entertaining, which is tough. It's hard to talk constantly while playing a game. I tried to do one once, it was too hard for me to keep things interesting. Good luck, though, give it a shot and I'm sure people here would love to give you feedback. Don't think it's really that big of a deal which games you pick.
I'd go for some more obscure, yet interesting looking titles. You've got to look for games that aren't so much about what's interesting to play, but what's interesting to watch someone else play and comment on.

Over-ambitious low budget games are prime fodder. Also, if you look at the crapshoot that will give you some idea of the kind of titles that work, even though it's in a different format to what you're aiming to produce.
Well I see that in Crapshoot there is the 7th Guest, I remember seeing a video where it was mentioned to be a great game. I could try that, I guess. But I am keen on doing Thief 3 and Fallout Tactics before.

Whatever games you choose, you have to think about your audience.

Things that turn me off from LP's and some tips:

1) Too much cussing for cussing's sake. I have no problem with swears, I have no problem with frustration leading to outbursts. Interspersing in four letter words just to be "cool"? Nope.

2) Don't constantly badger your viewers to "Like", "Favorite", or "Subscribe". You will gain avid subscribers if you just play the games and provide commentary that is witty/informative/in character/etc

3) Don't give up if you don't get alot of views right off. Don't give up if you don't rake in subscribers right away - it takes time, many people [myself included] will watch a few videos [or a whole playlist] before deciding whether to subscribe or not.

4) If you know the game, don't just rush through it and "zerg" doing everything optimally. It is no fun [in my opinion] watching someone just dash through the game [often skipping dialogue] like they are trying to set a record.

5) Don't be afraid to play a game you have never touched before, sure some youtube commentors will be dicks and say you should do stuff different - but go at your pace and learn the game as you do the LP [some of the best LP's I have seen are those where the person doing the LP had never played the game before and took their time going through it].

6) Don't be disenheartened by idiotic comments [I have to admit that idiotic comments made me stop doing videos with commentary completely and made me wary of posting anything - I am not LPer material though]

Adiing to CJs list

7) Don't do an LP while you've got something like the sniffles

8) Don't assume you're better at a particular game than everyone who might view the LP

I don't cuss often, so I doubt I'll start cussing in a video [Unless I'm frustrated]. I don't enjoy when other YouTube celebrities say that, so I probably will stay away from that. I am doing games I know, not enough to rush it, but enough that I don't need a tutorial.

Thank you for the advice!
Hmm... Now that I've thought about it a little, I think I'll do the Thief trilogy.

Do something interesting with it. Not just playing and trying to be funny or something. Do some research and tell stuff about it while you play and if you like what your playing and why or why not. Amost like dvd commentary track. I would watch your let's plays. Or do mostly GOG- games. that would also be great.
The best thing to do is pull the viewer right in at the beginning. Show 'em what you got in the first 5-10 minutes of a video. Be humorous, drop knowledge, whatever style you want to do. Do nothing that would make people close the window.
I'll be recording tonight! My first vid will be posted here as a link for all interested.
I vastly prefer Let's Play videos where the player hasn't played the game before. Games played by experts often involve the player talking about everything in a sort of annoying discursive way:

Interesting:
"Hm, I think i'll trust this guy and help him."

Not interesting:
"This guy actually betrays you in the second act, but we can just agree with him here for a free power up."

Also using excessive game-specific jargon can be off-putting. If I haven't spent 100 hours with this game I may have no idea what you're talking about.

Something else I like in an LP is when the commentator really gets into the world of the game. It is sometimes cool if they almost "roleplay" their character even if it isn't an RPG. e.g. If you are playing Thief you could play and comment as though you were garrett (of course you'd need to be very familiar with the games)

Otherwise, I like an LP that is genuinely funny. This is not something that you can force, however. You are either funny or you are not, and if you are not but you think you are , then you will not get very far.

Look forward to see what you can do..
Wow, seeing all your post really are cool! I haven't recorded yet. But after reading this I think I should start already.

Hmmm... while I haven't played the game fully yet, I do know some pretty cool benchmarks this game (Thief GOLD) has made when it came out. I do like the idea of role-playing the character, but I fear me putting on a tough-guy/renegade voice will only make me sound silly.

speaking as a veiwer, i'd say stay away from anything that'll make you seem silly. especially if you're first starting out. get yourself a good dedicated audience first before you try anything "daring". Good luck, I hope you turn into a great LPer
