I'm sure this has already been covered throughout various posts but can someone explain to me how they can list games as DRM free when you have to be connected to activate it. I wanted to buy some titles to take to the computer at our caravan and cannot use them as we have no internet connection there, luckily the few cheap titles i tried i could simply copy & paste the installed folder and it worked ok but still DRM free in their game decriptions is misleading and wrong.
Well, the games are technically DRM free, since there are no restrictions for the actual games, just the installer. Though, as you mentioned, if you copy the install files while you are installing the game, you can use them without being connected.

Does that work for all the DRM free titles ? as it isn't so bad if you can back them up that way.

Yes. That's what I've done with every game I've bought there regardless of what if any other copy protection it uses.

Lobuno: I guess not.
Im not trying to start a slanging match here but i was under the impression drm free meant the following,
DRM Free means, that I the owner :
a.) Can backup the game (True)
b.) Can install it on multiple machines without limitations (True)
c.) Does not need to go online (after i have downloaded it of course) (False)

And exactly how were you supposed to download the game without going online? With the same logic GOG is not DRM free either.

It's not the downloading files i was refering to it's the activating it afterwards if you take the installer files and put them on another computer which doesn't have internet access you cannot install them. GOG games can be backed up and installed anywhere without internet access.

You've got to copy the files while the installer is running. The downloader should start the installer immediately after downloading has completed. So just copy the folder then. You should know when this has happened correctly as there should be a file labelled setup.exe, install.exe or similar in the backed up directory. There won't be otherwise.
Thanks.

OMG, are you serious???
You don't need to be online but you DO NEED to have the game files, be it on a pen drive, a CD-ROM, on a hard disk, whatever.... Internet is not a requeriment as long you have the game files to install and play these games. How would you expect to acquire the game files, through magic or something?
I have my entire GOG collection on a 16GB pendrive, so I can install and play anywhere in ay computer without any hassle, no cd-keys, no DRM on CDs or DVDs, no internet required, nothing at all..... so yes that's exactly DRM free...

I'm not referring to downloading the files, of course i need to be online for that. I mean't if i back them up and take them to another computer i cannot install them. But now i know how the installer works i can grab the files i need and back them up so problem solved.

The games marked as DRM free are DRM free (they contain no SecuROM, no TAGEs, no StarForce, etc.). The installer, however, which verifies that you actually purchased the game, requires you to be online in order to perform that verification. It is simply checking that you have the right to download/install their copy of the game and is not DRM in the sense you assume it is. It is simply the same as having to log into GOG to download a game, for example.
Do you guys think that GG already know about the workaround to bypass their authentication? I sure hope they don't ever fix that. Has it been like this since the start of their business?
