SimonG: Anybody remembering the first RTS games. Those before "right clicking". Today I consider Warcraft and Dune II pretty much unplayable. No "drag box" and hitting "attack" and "move" everytime to issue the order really isn't doable for me anymore.
I agree, Warcraft and Dune have horrible controls too. The controls in those games are also much worse than the controls in Gothic 1, Gothic 2 and Mafia. I would not be able to play those games today.

Agreed, but I guess it was because they still thought they are (turn-based) tactical/strategy games, where you couldn't normally group select units either, but micromanaged each unit individually, one by one. Say, XCom tactical fights for example.

Apparently someone saw only later that maybe in a realtime game you'd really want to be able to easily command groups of units.

BTW, in Warcraft 1 you could actually command a small team of units, but you had to select them to the team one by one, and you couldn't save the teams for later access. In Dune 2, you really had to micromanage each unit individually.

Fahrenheit. Those fifteen minutes I spent on it was grilled pain in annoyance sauce. Ugh. :|

timppu: I survived the Ultima Underworld and System Shock controls, so any controls feel "fine" to me after them.

That said:

Elmofongo: I honestly don't understand peoples dislike of the tank-like controls of resident evi and silent hill honestly they are not that hard to control

timppu: I never really figured out that well how you are supposed to hit the slow-moving zombies. If I tried to hit their head (the only way to kill them without using all your bullets?), 90% of the time I'd miss with my shots.
you destroy a zombies head by aiming a shotgun upward while the zombie is getting close or just shoot them with a magnum even from far away and if you can't aim directly at the enemy there is a auto-aim feature in options, just press the aim button and your character directly aims at the enemy.

StingingVelvet: This might be PC gamer blasphemy but I also hate when games make me use the function keys. I'm just terrible at finding them quickly.
Function keys are just fine for Quick Save / Quick Load, but they are a pain to use in a hurry to activate the correct augmentation :)

absolutely, Jedi Knight 2 had by default all force powers maped to the function keys. man, does that suck, even f1-4 are practically unreachable from wsad. how the hell are you supposed to use them while fighting.

the problem with gothic 1 is for the most part that it seems like they intended more different interactions. everything works by taking something into focus by holding ctrl or lmb(afair) down and pressing a direction key.
it is awkward but you can get used to that.
Grim Fandango is the only one which I can remember, normally I just change the settings so that everything suits me^^ And seems like I`m a minority here, but I never felt uncomfortable with the Gothic key controls :-)
beyond Good n Evil, horrendus camera.
I'm not sure I'd call them terrible, but the controls in Killer 7 sure took some getting used to.

Once I got a hang of it, they worked out fine though.
