One of the most complex space simulations gets a free expansion--and goes on sale!

[url=http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/space_rangers_2_reboot]Space Rangers 2: Reboot, an updated version of Space Rangers 2: Dominators with the Reboot expansion, is available for only $3.99 for the next 48 hours.

Some expansions get lost in space, some updates vanish in supermassive black holes, some patches are destroyed in supernova explosions. However, our brave GOG.com Space Exploration department ventures boldly where no being has gone before, discovers Gems, and brings them back to Earth. Back to where they belong--on your gameshelf! Space Rangers 2: Reboot is the full version of Space Rangers 2: Dominators, the game we’ve been selling for more than a year now, with the Reboot expansion added in as well. Because we are who we are, we will not charge you for the expansion: if you already bought Space Rangers 2: Dominators, we've already switched the games on your shelves--download it now!. And if you’re interested in the game and have been waiting for this add-on, you can pick it up now 60% off for the next two days.

Space Rangers 2: Reboot is an eclectic mix of turn-based combat strategy, 4X game, third-person shooter, trade simulation, and arcade shooter. It combines space exploration, real-time strategy, puzzle-solving, and the character development of role-playing games. It’s a game that sounds like it would be an unplayable mess, but that’s far from the truth. The game works--and it works great! The Reboot expansion not only delivers new maps, quests, and game modes, but also introduces bug fixes for some issues in the original Space Rangers 2: Dominators.

Enjoy the ultimate space ranger simulation for only $3.99 for the next 48 hours.

tburger: There is a holiday in Poland tomorrow - does 48h long promo means that we will not get Thursday release?
There will be a release tomorrow, don't worry.

timppu: I could never really figure out before whether "Reboot" was an expansion to SR2, or a completely new, standalone, version of SR2. Depending where you read, it was either of the two. E.g. MobyGames suggests it is a mere expansion:
My research indicates it was both, which is why it's so confusing to everyone.
avatar
DoctorGOGgles: The original installer is gone and there isn't an option to install Dominators only, but Reboot adds and fixes many things (the black screen during the videos for example) without altering the core game, so I doubt you'll want to return to Dominators.
avatar
SirPrimalform: I always like the option of installing a base game without an expansion, I'm just weird like that.
Given that it's a bugfix--and also due to some legal stuff--we just replaced the master on our servers. No original version anywhere.

Zoltan999: Tried buying 4 times...got added to "my cart", but each time I tried to "checkout", got the 404 error....nuttin there...
Try again. I just tested it and I haven't received a 404 error.

Zoltan999: Hey Judas...just tried again, no dice :( Not sure why it's happening. I add it to the cart, and the little cart icon at top shows "1", but also the drop dropdown keeps showing a spinning arrow, as if it is still working. From the top I cannot go to checkout, but when I click down lower (where you can wishlist the game, or "checkout" from there) on the "checkout now", it just keeps bringing me to the 404 error page saying nothing is in there...

I just passed along your issue to Support :)

Out of curiosity - what browser (incl. version) are you using? Have you tried different one? Last but not least - can you try adding a different game to your cart and proceeding to checkout with it?

MrWilli: I am trying to buy the game but its says I have an error 404 when I try to log out. Same problem as Zoltan999.

Nevermind, used Google Chrome and it worked. But IE doesn't which is strange.
Glad to know it works in Chrome... no clue what's the issue with IE here - I've forwarded it to the dev team, we'll see what can be done

Zoltan999: Using Internet Explorer 9 Ver. 9.0.8112.16421 Also listed under that: Update Ver. 9.0.6 (KB2675157) My most recent Windows update was this past tuesday the 5th of June. Not sure if that update included a browser update or not, I'll try checking. Yeah, tried checking out with a different game, and the exact same thing happened. Appreciate any advice or suggestions you might have...Thanks. (Don't have a different browser at the this time to try, until now, always been fine with IE...)
As a temporary workaround, can you please try adding the game to cart in Google Chrome or Safari or Firefox? I've forwarded the issue to the dev team, but since tomorrow we have a bank holiday here, I do not know how quickly we can apply a fix...

North: I was one of the people that asked for this Addon to be brought to GOG. Without it, SR2 isn't complete. It was an instant buy the moment I saw the announcement. Thank you GOG.

If you are asking yourself if you should get this game, what I can tell you is that I've enjoyed this series a lot.
I'll chime in here because SR2 is also one of my favorite games. It's one of those "one more turn. OK, still have time for one more planetary quest...*12 hours later* ooohh sunlight...." kind of games for me. This game actually earned me the "Space Rangers expert" at the office because I was quite enthusiastic about it :D.

mistermumbles: Damn it! You shall not throw off my current run through Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Must resist temptation! =P

Now that the game actually runs on my lappie, I wouldn't be surprised if it was the next game I played afterwards. It certainly sounds like an oddly fascinating mishmash that I never got to experience until now. *mumbles something about stupid integrated graphics chips*
The mishmash actually does work. It's not like they just threw everything in there and said "OK we make game gief moneys". All of the different elements have a reason for being there. The planetary adventures are there for when you have a specific quest to fulfill, the RTS sequences are basically mop up operations for when you clear a system of Dominators, etc. etc. And then you have the whole freedom to do what you want. If you want to just play a space pirate and pillage transport ships all day and snatch their cargo, then go for it. You can even engage in other illicit activities such as smuggling. Basically, if you think of something, then chances are you do it in the game.

Tychoxi: The brave souls of GOG's Space Exploration Department didn't happen to find themselves amidst some alien crossfire perchance while retrieving this fine looking game I'll probably be buying?
I see what you did there...:D

ne_zavarj: Only one game ? :(
And we released a game today too, you know. :P

JMich: Have also sent a bug report a few hours back (five or six hours after the promo appeared) with a little more details on when I first encountered the bug. Not sure how fast the changes you do propagate across your servers, but I do hope it can be identified and fixed.

Mirkat: I managed to get the sale to work using FF. In IE, I got the 404 error and I could not post up comments here. Thanks GoG for this big sale!

We've applied a temporary fix that should fix the issue some of you were experiencing with IE. I recommend deleting cache or refreshing the page with CTRL+F5 (to overwrite local cache)

JMich: Still doesn't see me as logged in in the front page (takes too much time to show it, and if it doesn't show it after 1 minute, I guess it won't)
Try logging out and then relog from main page / any other page. Hopefully this should fix it.

zeffyr: Is it necessary to play Space Rangers first, before playing SR2?
Not really. The second game makes some minor references to SR1, but it's nothing game-breaking.

T.A.P.: I still can't purchase Space Rangers 2: Reboot.

I'm having the same problems the guy above me was having. I tried e-mailing customer service and posting in this thread yesterday, but neither of those functions was working for me either.
Have you tried Destro's recommended workaround with deleting your cache?
