Hi,

I have recently been playing L4D on the X360 and I wanted to try it on the PC as well, but I don't want to buy it just yet so I wanted a demo - but the question is where!? I mean, I can find all these articles on gaming sites about the demo, but no actual link, and I can't find it in Steam either.

So have they removed it or am I just unable to view in my region?

So yeah, anyone know how I can get it?

I don't recall there ever being a demo. Generally speaking though you're better off buying L4D2 now anyway. A lot of the maps have been ported over to 2.

Wait for the summer sale. That should make it hyper-affordable.

There was a demo for both L4D1 & L4D2. I think they were taken down though after the games came out not sure why myself.

I think they were taken down anyway its been too long for me to remember.

Ah yes, I remember that now. Like you said, they disappeared around the time the games were launched. Why? Probably because Valve isn't much more interested in a game's sales outside the initial launch period than most other publishers.
Balious is right, there used to be a demo on Steam, but it got taken down.

There are remnants of it in Steam's CDR (Content Description Record), and if you attempt to go to its Steam product page, here, you'll just get redirected to the frontpage.

Now the question is: Are there any other ways to get the demo? The answer is no, unfortunately, because Left 4 Dead is Steam-exclusive.

... but in all honesty, paying $20 for either L4D isn't much of a risk. They're both great games, and both still have a very active community. Better yet, just wait for them to go on sale and see if you can pick 'em up for $5 a pop.
Left for Dead had a demo, for about a week, before the launch of the game. I think it contained two maps. When the game was officially released the demo was putted down.

Here's the steam official news:

The demo is gone because after the full price era is over they rely on impulse buys, not educated purchases.

Anyway the game is so cheap so often you should just buy it. It's worth a few bucks even just to solo the game like I did, despite it totally not being made for that.

A right, I thought they might have done that. Oh well, thanks anyway. :-)

K, I might do that, although one other question - can you swap some files and make the L4D characters in L4D2? I know it seems trivial but.... :-)
So...

Running steam://install/530 won't work? I tried it and it asked me if I wanted to preload the demo. :p

But since I already own both games...

Hang on.. what do you mean running steam://install/530? From steam or what?

EDIT: I made a shortcut for a game and replaced the url with steam://install/530 and it comes up with a message about preloading it but it says no servers are currently configured to distribute the files or something... :(

Steam uses website urls with the steam:// prefix to load, run or install games. By using that in a browser, the run prompt, and shortcuts, you can do all of that.

And yeah, I didn't think it'd work anymore. :(

I thought all the maps were ported over now? The only reason to play L4D1 now is if you specifically don't want the new special infected or the new melee weapons and new guns. (Or if you want to play with someone who doesn't have the second game).
L4D 2 offers way more content than the first one now. With campaign its big difference. Minus point is the lost atmosphere and If you donli like it new weapons and infected.

Probably. It's been a while since I played it.
