OK, you're actually assuming a lot from my post that I didn't actually mean. I'll start with the biggest one - that you seem to assume I'm saying homophobia isn't really there, that's not what I've been saying at all, not even close. My point of discussion is regarding the advert in the original post, more specifically use of the term "gay" as an insult. I wouldn't for a second try to claim that homophobia is gone from society and that everyone has adopted an "I'm OK you're OK" attitude. The point I was trying to make is that use of the term "gay" as an insult doesn't always have anything to do with sexuality at all. Referring back to my previous analogy, if you call someone a bastard I don't think you even have unwed parents on your mind at all but that's what that's what the word refers to. It's the same with gay, the word has evolved.
Now of course there are still people out there who say it with its full meaning, though I expect that those who have real hatred for gays use more harsh words like "faggot" but that's beside the point. The issue is, the advert is trying to make a word taboo and I think that's a royal waste of time, especially when the word doesn't necessarily mean anything any more. From personal experience I have several friends who use the word "gay" to mean "a bit crap" and because I know them, I know that they're not even a little bit homophobic. Again, this may still be offensive to you and other gays but at that point I'd say perhaps it's time to take the word how it's meant rather than loading it with unintended offence. Someone earlier made a good point about saying "you suck" - I very much doubt anyone associates that with fellatio any more.
Your points about America are valid, proposition 8 was very surprising for what was supposed to be a liberal state, but then a lot of America has always seemed kind of batshit crazy to me. I'm surprised to hear that information about Canada though, I always thought of it as having more European sensibilities than American.
Finally I just want to specifically counter two points:

Again I refer to the use of the word "Bastard". That's generally considered an insult, but I expect you'd be hard pressed to find someone who uses that term and genuinely gives a shit whether another's parents are unwed. "Gay" isn't all the way there yet, but I think for an awful lot of people they use that term without any thought about homosexuality, and in fact many of them don't give a crap about it either way. As I've said, I've used the word lots of times to mean "a bit crap" and I really have no issue with homosexuality. In fact I was pretty disgusted with the outcome of proposition 8.
Finally:
"If anyone would like to share some stats on the plights of fat people, knock yourself out, but I don't appreciate the attempts to minimize the circumstances facing the GLBT community."
Hopefully this post points out that that's not at all what I was doing, I just don't think the advert is going to be of much use, and I think it's quite misguided. Also, as you can see from my last post, I'm not interested in comparing the suffering of fat people vs gay people. It's a gigantic waste of time.

Well the last thing I'm trying to do is suggest that the issues facing the LGBTers aren't important, quite the opposite I think it's incredibly important but then I think it's exactly as important as issues of racism or random pointless and hurtful discrimination and to suggest that one is any more important than the other is, to me, an example of selfishness

As Nafe has suggested, the comparison is quite ludicrous and I hope I have made that perfectly clear. I don't have the first hand experience of being overweight and I am not going to make assumptions. It is unfortunate you started this discussion in the first place when it is obvious you have no idea what it is like to be gay. I can assure you the GLBT community is incredibly tough: we have to be in order to put up with the mountain of shit I have been alluding. Six years of marriage equality is encouraging but there are still plenty of archaic laws in need of changing and many minds in need of opening. By making ignorant suppositions that belittle the struggles of any vulnerable people, to me, you sound like an asshole.
To clarify, I don't think you are homophobic and, often, your commentary demonstrates a cleverly evolved sense of humor. However, I must strongly disagree with your opinion, in this case. Your initial remarks appear to be an attempt to relate your own experiences in order to neutralize hostility: it didn't work. Even if grinning and bearing it is your means of educating the masses of the harm they inflict, you can not just copy and paste one solution for all. Gays, lesbians, bis, trans people, ethnic minorities, the overweight and the mentally & physically challenged all face discrimination, but the circumstances and available resources differ greatly. I am not going to say one struggle is more valid than another because that is somewhat subjective and, ultimately, irrelevant. I will say that you should think before you speak - err, type.
