Mentalepsy: When you download the game, there's a file called launch.dat that the downloader changes to setup.exe (or something similar) when the download is complete. It then runs setup.exe, which takes you to the main install program. Just copy the downloaded files while the main installer is still running, so that you get setup.exe instead of launch.dat. Then you can install the game like any other (I think autoplay even works).

I saved the SOTS:AMoC downloader, ran it latter, and decided run the setup myself rather than let the downloader launch it. I seem to have ended with the decrypted files. Then again, The setup did lock up Just after finishing the installation....
I'm on my Debian partition now ran the installer in WINE and it seems to have completed just fine and I'm pretty sure that I didn't have write access to drive I installed it from. The game itself doesn't run in WINE but that's not surprising. All the files are there, though.
I just deleted my WINE folder and unplugged my network cable before running the setup again and it still seems to work.
GOG and GG or the only services I really have a positive opinion of. However download speeds from GG have been pretty slow for me thus far.
I've used Steam and would describe it as livible but I avoid it when possible and haven't had deal with customer support yet.
Edit: Quoted the wrong person.

Depends how committed you are to DRM Free.
If not most any source is fine, however if you are you will be very limited to the games you purchase due to the DRM put int he vast majority of games.
GOG > Gamersgate > the others

For me, after the installer ends, setup.exe is changed back into launch.dat. I can use the 12k "download this game" executable to start the installer again without redownloading, if the files are there, but it asks me to log in to Gamersgate before it will start.
If I try to do this from a DVD, it tells me it has a write protection error.
Technically, it was the UC downloader. I don't know if there's any difference between the two, aside from what files they retrieve form the server.
I only remember being asked for my login when I started the download. I need a fresh install for ANY anyway so I'll start over and retrace my steps when I get a chance.
I'll try to burn the files to a DVD if I can find one. I ran the setup from my windows partition but I didn't have the permissions to write anything to the partition at the time.
Bansama, I linked to your article on the NWN2 boards in This Thread (page 5 in case the link takes you to the first page of the thread). My handle there is Eurypterid. The thread's a discussion about NWN2 coming to Steam.
May be worth pointing out that many indie games are sold completely DRM-free on Direct 2 Drive (it will say so in the product description if a game is DRM-free). You can also download files directly from them, without any downloader. And though they have regional restrictions (though usually not on the indie games), they don't seem to have different prices per region, like Steam. So for me they're often much cheaper than Steam.
After GOG, they're my favourite download site these days.
@Coelocanth interesting topic. I never did work out why Valve added a forum for that game given that it still hasn't turned up and while they still refuse to make forums for some games that have been sold over Steam for a year or more =/ It makes me wonder if they actually charge publishers/devs to have a forum made...

They do have regional pricing. If you check the prices of their UK arm, they are usually a little higher. And some of the deals they do are never filtered down to the UK site.
I've never used their UK site. Seems like a good idea to stick to the US one, then. :-)

LBartley: I notice there's a pretty big hate for Steam on GOG, are there any other recommended outlets for newer games?
Of course, I prefer to buy from GOG if at all possible, but some games just aren't old yet.

I saw that gamestop.com is offering DRM protected downloadable content.

I personally buy from gog.com and gamersgate. I only buy of steam if they have a supercheap package deal or nice weekend sale. Other then that I avoid steam.
Gamersgate never let me down. I find their customer service satisfactory and with the DRM, they have it but limitations dont count as said by others they just reset it for you.
Another plus point for GamersGate; it appears that when a product is on sale you can simply initiate an order and then not complete it (ie, have it set to pending state) then, even when that sale has finished, you can still go back and complete your order at the sale price.
Useful for when they have something you want on sale at a time you have no money for it. And seeing that since the site had its face lift, that it appears impossible now to cancel pending orders, you could probably keep an order at pending status for a rather long time. I have one from at least a month ago that is still at the sale price.
I doubt it's an intentional feature, but it's a useful one at least. (Of course, I've only tested this with the Paynova payment method. I have no idea if it will work with any of the other options they now offer).

Impulse. Use it. It rules.
It would rule if they hadn't started to impose regional restrictions on pretty much everything they are selling now.
I downloaded SOTS:UC from GG again and the install didn't quite go the way I remembered but I was still able to get what I did before without much trouble.
It seems that GGs downloader grabs the encrypted files, decrypts them, launches the installer, stays in the background, and then re-encrypts everything when the installer is finished. If the down-loader crashes or the process is killed while the installer is running, you'll just have the one subdirectory and the installer will be un-encrypted.
