Gather your magic, mighty hero!

Etherlords, a challenging turn-based strategy game with exquisite visuals and unique trading-card battle mechanics, is now available on GOG.com for only $5.99.

Ether is everything. Therefore the one who controls the Ether controls the whole of the existence. But Ether isn't just a mindless force saturating the universe. It has a will of its own and it won't submit easily. It seeks balance in all things but at the same time it hates stagnation. It drives the four intelligent races--the dexterous winged Kinets, the forest worshiping Vitals, the fearsome brutes Chaots, and the bio-metallic Synthets--to find their equilibrium in battle. The face of the world ever changing, the balance of the world ever shifting--Ether does not allow any of the factions to keep the upper hand. But there is one person wielding the ultimate power over Ether in all of its diversity. Can you defeat him and become the next White Lord?

Etherlords combine the trading-card duel mechanics of Magic: The Gathering with the world exploration and resource gathering of Heroes of Might and Magic. The player takes control over a champion of one of the game's four diverse races and embarks on a quest for ultimate power. On his way, he will collect and produce new cards to build a supreme deck allowing to summon units into battle. The game offers two extensive campaigns: one for the Kinets and Vitals, who represent the light and prolific aspect of Ether, the other one for Chaots and Synthets, who personify the dark and destructive facet of the omnipresent force. The choice of a race, however, affects the gameplay much more than the choice of faction, as each of the four champions has his own agenda and a unique set of spells and units.

Learn how to draw power out of thin air, build your ultimate deck, and become one of the Etherlords, for only $5.99!

Fred_DM: looks like Generic Fantasy Wargame #357. seriously, this ISN'T what Nival is known for...
You couldn't be more wrong

It's totally unique tactic combat experience. I recommend it to any turn based fantasy strategy game fans.

G-Doc: Either way, the game is pretty unique and--most importantly--really challenging.
I absolutely agree to this. I still have the disc somewhere... a really good game and one of my favourites. In my opinion a cool mix of trading cards and turn based strategy. I'm really happy that it's finally here. Instabuy!
Turns out that for years when I said "Disciples 2" I meant this game... stupid HoMM clones...

G-Doc: Actually I think this series is what allowed Nival to make a name for themselves. AFAIK Etherlords contributed to the decision of putting Nival in charge of development of HoMM5. Either way, the game is pretty unique and--most importantly--really challenging.
i believe that, but i've never heard of the game. what i was trying to say is that Blitzkrieg and Sudden Strike are the kind of games that Nival is known for, and since Blitzkrieg 2 and the Sudden Strike series are still missing on GOG, i would have expected to see them here first, before the more obscure titles of the studio.

just saying. Blitzkrieg 2 and the Sudden Strike series would be must-haves for me. this game isn't.

Looks like a nice concept btw...

It is actually quite different from other games. Combat is handled through in a way similar to playing Magic the Gathering. You have a deck of cards, and will draw a new one each turn (I don't remember the starting hand size). These cards represents creatures, spells & enhancements. At regular intervals your mana supply will increase (basically like playing a land in magic, though it is on a timer in this game).
So the main trick to winning in this game is to build strong decks. As the game goes on, you will get more and more cards, and you will have to find cards that synergize well. Some are more obvious than others (creatures of the same category tend to buff each other), while some combinations requires some more thought & experience for the player to find out about. Overall, I quite like Etherlords, though both the first & second game in the series are quiet hard, even on easy.

Etherlords obscure? O_o

But no, if you can't recall the game, then it isn't worthy...

I remember playing it a bit when it came out. But it just didn't drag me in. Never even bothered finishing it. Maybe one of these days ...

It does look kind of generic. But it certainly doesn't play generic... I remember reviewing the game for a gaming website I worked for back in the day... As I remember it I gave it a 4/6 basically giving it a thumbs up for the gameplay.
I have Etherlords 1 and 2 on disc , it is well woth picking up and as someone else mentioned it is quite unique and can be very difficult. Also a real steal at 5.99 :-)

Don't really need any more games, but this looks pretty interesting. So wishlisted for now,
Great game! I recommend it.
Although Etherlords 2 would be even better. It's essentially the same game, but it improves a bit on the first one.
I remember this one, a HOMM-loving friend of mine was quite excited for it back in the day.
Not my cup of tea, but a good release.
