Bad influence. Just like the Roadrunner cartoons.

, the infamous adventure game exploring the darkest corners of human psyche and boasting graphic violence in the best tradition of b-movies, is available in its uncensored version on GOG.com, for only $5.99. Our exclusive interview with Lee Jacobson, the game's producer, can be found in the [url=http://gogcom.tumblr.com/post/78954868646/harvester-interview]GOG.com Official Blog.

Remember, this is all just a game. You'll play as the amnesiac Steve (who is such a kidder!) as you try to figure out why you should join the Order of the Harvest Moon and discover the horror that lurks just beneath Harvest's small-town veneer. Meet some of the strangest characters to ever grace the computer screen--such as Mr. Pottsdam who really, really loves red meat or Colonel Monroe who guards the nuclear missile base and holds The Button. Harvest is a lovely town and the locals aim to keep it that way, no matter the cost...

Harvester is believed by some to be the inspiration for establishing the Entertainment Software Rating Board, as the game's first public showing at 1994 CES caused enough controversy to take the debate over violence in games to a whole new level. This title takes every possible opportunity to throw gore and graphic violence at the player. It wasn't, however, designed only to shock the audience. It's trippy story taking off in small-town America and touching down in mass-murderville can easily be attributed with a deeper meaning. How dark is the darkness at the bottom of the human soul? In its own campy, over-the-top way, this unique title looks for the answer to that question. With traditional puzzle-oriented point-and-click gameplay, live-action sequences, and characters portrayed by real-life actors, this nearly 20 year old game is still more than enjoyable. That is, if you can stomach the gore.

If you want to see a game that would never have a chance to be made in modern times, you really need a copy of Harvester, for only $5.99 on GOG.com.

PS. The GOG.com team would like to heartlily thank our long-time user and supporter, tfishell, whose help in securing the release rights for this title was invaluable!

I’d just like to personally thank tfishell for his huge help in making Harvester available by helping me get in touch with the rights holder. Without his efforts to track down the rights holder we wouldn’t be having this great release today. Thanks also to Novotnus and the other rights researchers from our forums and the Harvester fans over at https://www.facebook.com/lodge.level.4 for their assistance. We greatly appreciate all your efforts!

timppu: I approve this release. This is the uncensored version, right? I have the retail version, I think it is supposed to be the uncensored version. But I couldn't ever be fully sure, as I am unsure what exactly tells whether the version is censored or not.

Back then I recall there being talk about a certain axe scene that would be either missing or shortened in the censored version. But looking at Mobygames trivia for this game, it mentions mainly some cannibal scene.

I think my retail version has that, unless I am thinking of the "ingame sections" that were still in the censored version... Does anyone know for sure how to tell the uncensored version from the censored.
If you don't have the Merit logo being displayed and you have an English version then it's censored :) The US version had the Merit logo show up instead of the Virgin Interactive logo :)

timppu: Thanks, I don't recall now but I'll check that. Back when I bought the retail version, I at least tried to make sure it is not the censored version, but never were 100% sure I was able to buy that.

Either way, I will probably buy (and replay) the GOG version at some point.
Oh ours is very much uncensored. You have no idea how much I bothered our QA department about that. Oh boy was I an annoying git about THAT. You have my word it's 100% uncensored.

lukaszthegreat: it is the game with a police officer eating a cake in front of a dead body right?
avatar
Novotnus: Two dead bodies :)

Hey guys,

In case you were wondering, the French and Spanish versions of Harvester are now LIVE! :D
avatar
Wurzelkraft: Gore and disturbing images aside: Is it worth playing for the gameplay and story? The graphics remind of (bad) FMV games and this is not a good thing.
Depends on what you are looking for in a given story.

Think of Harvester as a really good B-movie. Sure, the story might not make sense at all times but sometimes that adds to the game's overall charm :D

xxxIndyxxx: Any reply on this guys??

"Does it run using dosbox or windows mode? Also does lodgelevel 4 have a site or forum? I can't seem to find it and i do not like facebook ;)"
It uses DOSBox and the Facebook site is the fan site :)

vicklemos: Great!
I thought this game was gonna be published by Nightdive Games. Why isn't it?
Because Lee Jacobson owns the rights? :)

fronzelneekburm: "Mein freund... vhere ist your legs?"

An hour into the game, it is turning out exactly as I imagined it. This thing is all kinds of brilliant!
They owed me!

Novotnus: Come on, do you think 'Łukasz' is a common Australian name? :)
avatar
zeffyr: Not really, shame on me :>

Interesting thing guys: according to that review Harvester cost 149 PLN, which was about 51$ back then. Nowadays, including inflation, it would cost 74$!

I would still consider paying that much, if I was 18 back then :D
I saw one review that listed the original price of Harvester as $79.95 :O
