La Mulana, a challenging free-form platformer in ancient Mayan ruins, is now available on GOG.com for only $9.99. That's 33% off the regular price until Thursday, October 11 at 10:59 AM GMT.

The ancient Mayan city of La-Mulana is said to hold innumerous secrets. The mysterious tribe guarding it from the outside world claims that the ancient knowledge locked within the forgotten tombs holds the key to understanding the purpose and origin of life itself. A daring young archeologist by the name of Lameza Kosugi--an Indiana Jones lookalike with Japanese roots--takes on the quest to unravel the mystery of the foreboding ruins. With his trusty whip (standard archeology-issue) and a vintage "Mobile Super X" laptop, he ventures into the unknown. Some say that he might be the chosen one. Otherwise the tribe of protectors wouldn't let him go anywhere near the ruins. True question remains: does he really have what it takes to face the treacherous traps, menacing monsters, and gigantic guardians of La-Mulana?

The original low-res version of La Mulana met with critical acclaim as one of the most difficult and elaborate indie platformers of the 2000s. Its high-res remake delivers the same challenge and scale but this time with colorful pixel-art graphics your eyes can feast upon. Gamers worldwide fell in love with La-Mulana's free-form archeological action/exploration gameplay. Now it's your turn to put on an adventurer's hat, grab that handy whip, and set off for the huge Mayan ruins, that hold the secret of the origin of life on Earth. Don't miss out on one of the greatest challenges for the fans of platformer genre!

Search every corner of the ancient ruins, reach seemingly unreachable platforms, and defeat many fearsome guardians to uncover the secret of La Mulana, for the launch promo price of only $9.99!

So are chronic masturbators.
La-Mulana is what happens when Metroid, Castlevania, Zelda, and Indiana Jones have a foursome. This game is very much old school in terms of difficulty, but is designed perfectly for what it does, and should be considered to be one of the best platformers in my opinion.

Then again, Schopenhauer said that in life we are either bored or suffering... Huh :|.

G-Doc: Given the difficulty level of La Mulana I do believe that Schopenhauer would find it extremely NOT BORING. ;-)
Considering that Schopenhauer looks like Dr. Wily, he could be hard to amuse with hardcore plaforming https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Schopenhauer.jpg

Hell - he'd claim it represents the world in distilled form.
Let me drop a quote here:
"(...) it is a world of constant struggle, where each individual thing strives against every other individual thing; the result is a permanent 'war of all against all' (...)"

You may be onto something here...
Well, shit, I really don't need to buy this game.
I really don't.
I have the original freeware version.
And I'm somewhat broke.
Midterms are coming up, and I don't need the distraction either.

...But this one is enhanced.
And the controls look better.
And I want to support the developers and GOG.
And it is $5 cheaper than normal.
And that music and adventure.

So, yeah, like I was saying, I was just going to buy this.
How is the commercial La-mulana different from the free version?
Aw man, I got the game through Playism back in August! I wish it had come out on here sooner! I just like the look of my gog.com games library :P

Anyway I'm about 13 hours in and there is still SO MUCH STUFF I don't get. Going by the number of big guardian bosses that there are in the game, I would be more than half-way through, but I get the feeling like that isn't the case...

I really hope that the game takes off now that it's on here! Cheers!

Well... Anecdotes say that he hated pretty much everyone and everything, including his entire family (his sister first and foremost and, by proxy, women in general)... except his pet dog.
With that in mind - wouldn't he feel right at home playing punishingly hard old-school games in his solitude ?

Hey - it just hit me. The final chapters claim (IIRC) that art is pretty much the only refuge, so he'd more than likely praise computer games as a way to escape the constant struggle ;P.

There has been the addition of a note-taking system that allows you to record the tablets and conversations you encounter. This is very important for recalling details to solve the various puzzles in the game. In addition to this, the interface has been reworked to be more friendly.

Graphics has been upped from MSX-quality to something closer to what you would find in SNES and PSX games. Depending on your preferences, this may or may not be an improvement.

The balance of the game has been reworked, mostly so that puzzles are more easily understood, but there have been changes to enemy placement and abilities. Some bosses and mini-bosses have been significantly changed, mostly because the remake could make them more complex. (The original game held itself to MSX technical standards)

I would say that the remake is the superior version, but the original version would appeal to hardcore retro fans of 8-bit gaming. I recommend picking up the soundtracks for both versions, as they are very different from each other.

Free version looks like a game from , the commercial from SNES but a little better. There could be some spoilers in the movie links, I didn't find the best suited videos.

Great release. :)

Improved graphics the free version of La-Mulana was made to look like a MSX game, the remake also features if memory serves: better jumping, improved controls, more balanced difficulty,a bit more hints early on, more save slots and better save system as in the orginal you can only save with a certain cart in your in game computer and speaking to the elder in the remake you save at special save stones scattered through out the game and a few other improvements. in short it's a improved version of the original

Damn, already own this game through Playism. Ah, well. I highly recommend this one to Metroidvania fans. The game will take about 40 hours to play through the first time, and that's even with some help on some of the later puzzles. Remember, almost anything can be an obscure clue :)
Looks pretty great.
well I guess I'm going to get this by the weekend, shame they couldn't give the orginal free La-Mulana as a bonus/goodie. I was going to holdout to see whats on this weekends sale and next weeks releases but this was too good to pass up

It's free so why do you need it here?
