Vampyre Story is a more recent game with good reviews. I haven't played it, though.

Myst is an excellent adventure game. Very deep in the puzzle-solving. It's not for everybody, though. There isn't really a sense of danger to it, but there is a way to accidentally kill yourself. Either that, or the game froze (pre-GOG).
I'll have to take a deeper look at that list, but I love Monkey Island. Hope it's on there!
