What size do you think would be good to upgrade a PS3 to, if you're going from 20 GB? Also, I'm not sure if I need to get a specific manufacturer's hard drive that fits in the PS3, or if I just need to find any old FAT32 hard drive.

Gamespot have an article which should answer your question here.
From what little I've read on the subject, as long as the hard drive is a 2.5 sata then you should be right

For the size question, I'd go through the PSN store and make a list of everything you might buy one day, total the drive space they need and then add a hundred gig. That or just get the cheapest option that gives you a lot of storage for your caps
Haha caps, can you tell what game I've been playing lately?

Any 2.5 Inch SATA drive will work, the formatting on it doesn't matter because the PS3 will format it how it likes, also the manufacturer doesn't matter to the PS3 either.
As for the size, that all depends on what you want to do with it. Just games off of the PSN, 120GB should last you quite a while... If you plan on adding your music or movie collection, that all depends on how large those collections are.
Personally I just say get a 500GB and call it good that you don't have to worry about it for quite a while. Also you may want to look into "PS3 Media Server" if you have a VERY large media collection. Also if you plan on installing Linux, keep in mind how much space you'll want for that.
Any other questions?
Go for broke, put in a 500GB, you'll probably never have need for more and you (currently) can't get a larger drive that will fit a PS3 anyway. As for what kind of drive, it must be 2.5" 5400RPM serial ATA laptop drive.
I agree with 500GB. Last I checked it was the best value for money too. I doubt its price has risen since.

That's it. Thanks! As for the installing part, I already know how to do that.

is it actually RPM specific? i was under the impression any 2.5" would work

Last I heard, it does require a specific RPM drive. That could have changed as the PS3 has changed, though.
