I went to a computer store today. Tell him I need a video card that has a 300W power supply requirement. Sure he says. We're getting them in tomorrow. One $65 card and another $90 for a 500W power supply. Wait what? I said 300W power supply. Is it rated for 300W? Yes he replies. But I'm not covering the warranty if you don't buy a power supply. What?

I'm getting pretty annoyed at this point. He then asks what processor I have. Answer with Q6600. He goes on how 300W won't even power the processor alone. What? What the hell has it been doing for the past two and a half years then? My parents certainly haven't been staring at a blank screen for two and a half years. The conversation basically ended there. I understand safety factor but there's no way in hell I need a 200W safety margin especially given the card he's selling has a lower max power usage than the card that came with the pc.

These guys drive me insane with their dishonesty. Yesterday HP wanted to charge $117 for a replacement 9500GS (a scaled down 9500GT) video card. The card isn't even worth half that.

Since it's my parents PC, they don't want to order online. So I'm stuck talking to assholes all day.

lol

anyhow. can't you find a small computer shop with normal people? I like to buy from them not from those big corporations.
There are no honest salesmen, or very few if any. Find which of your local stores sells a 6670 1 gig. It draws its power straight from the pcie slot and around these parts runs from $60-80 USD.

Can't you order for them?

It's hard enough convincing them to order a book or movie online for them. PC parts are out of the question.

Still a few out there like this guy:

Thought most just in it to get more money and you go in for one thing, they want you to come out buying more.
What's the issue with ordering on-line?
Find somewhere they aren't commissioned.
Use a shotgun! Shotguns bring out the honest salesman in everyone! :D

And don't be afraid to abuse the lead injection into those creatures of villany!

LOL. Yeah, going Arthur Miller on their asses is sometimes an enticing option as well.

Why not order from Craiglist(you guys have that right/) or eBay and have it delivered so that it looks like you bought it offline or something.

But imo that whole "It's rated for 300w but we won't cover it unless you buy a higher rated PSU" crap is bullshite.

They're probably scared they'll be ripped off. Tell them then that ordering from such con-artist shops is worse in terms of being ripped off and they'll get the message or see it your way. Or as I said above.....order online and act like you bought it offline. Tell them you're going to pick it up and need the money and then order it.

Well I'll see what I can do in convincing them. It's also Christmas time making it the worst time to order. Delays, cold, snow, mailmen leaving colossal packages on the front step that are just begging to be stolen etc.

I suppose a card is in stock about an hour away. Maybe I could take a nice long journey there or something sometime this month to get it.

But prices are low right now, especially on Amazon and similar places! :)

Yeah but then their performance is based on whether they can sell you Monster cables and an aftermarket warranty. There's basically no winning sometimes.
What happened to the honest salesman? Sounds like the setup for a water cooler joke to me...
