You're right, games like GTA 3 and Morrowind are freeroam games.

I guess I'm not a big fan of sandbox games, but I'm currently playing Aquaria and that one has quite a bit of freeform exploration, too (I like it but actually I'm already wishing the areas were a bit smaller :D ). Not sure if that counts.

In that case I vote for the old classic, Crush, Crumble, and Chomp: http://www.mobygames.com/game/crush-crumble-and-chomp

Edit: I guess I haven't played many of the other type of sandbox games, so I'm fairly limited to Morrowind and maybe some other one that skips my mind for now.

The original from the 90s was good, but the remake is too linear and consolified and they dumbed down the dump truck mechanics and removed some of the rarer buckets.

Ultima 6 was my first and most memorable "sand box" style game. the Ultima series pioneered this type game.

GTA3 was probobaly the most fun ive had. playing with friends and just rampaging and killiing poeple. so much fun.
