I think regen allows them to design levels a bit more dynamically. They don't have to worry about the health packs being spaced out based on pre-set enemy locations. They can also focus on making each encounter more of an individual challenge since even the weakest enemy can often kill you if you're not careful.

Maybe. But its a little unrealistic being shot by few enemies, killing them, waiting few seconds, being shot by other enemies, killing them, waiting few seconds... Again and again this thing.
But I guess they must make life even easier for those who don't know how to freaking aim at enemies (given that most shooters have auto aim crap on consoles). Now with this regeneration system, they won't even have to "worry" about themselves, just press the freaking button on the controller to finish the game. :/
as long as the story is compelling i couldnt care less about pedantic gameplay mechanics.

Is it any more unrealistic then a magic red box with a cross on it that can instantly heal all wounds and stop all bleeding? Youre never going to get a realistic health system in a video game ( or at least an FPS). I personally liked what they did in the Riddick games where you had a broken up health bar and you could regenerate health up until it dropped below one of the bars then it would not go above that level again unless you got to a health station. Kinda a best of both worlds. The game looks like it could either be very good or just mediocre. I'm pretty sure it wont be horrific but it's also not going to be the next big thing.

Random health packs spread around a level is realistic?
And a regenerating health doesn't automatically mean it's easier. Most of the games I've played that use that system don't let you get shot as many times before you die. Yes you can wait for your health to come back (sort of like backtracking to a health pack you left behind), but you can't just run into a room full of enemies without getting instantly killed.

Navagon: There needs to be a combination of the two. So you have a trauma and a health bar. The trauma bar shows how much damage you can take in one go. Too much and you're dead. The health bar shows your overall vitality. As it decreases, your susceptibility to trauma increases.
Health never fully recovers until the mission is over. But medikits can stop any bleeding and further loss of health. They also recover some of your overall trauma meter. Naturally, decent armour means your health is less affected by ballistics damage. So the system would require you use stealth and cover rather than charging in guns blazing like the you're friggin Odin.
What do you guys think? An improvement?

klaymen: IIRC similar system was used in Vietcong 1 on higher difficulties. On easy the medic healed you to full health, on hard and hardest your maximum health was lowered with every shot.

So did it have the trauma system in there too, or was it just that you couldn't recover your health?

soulgrindr: I like the "hide and pull out a needle" style they used in Farcry2, AvP (for the predator), etc... I don't know why more games don't use it.

Battlefield: Bad Company.
As for Jedi Outcast, I can understand if you didn't like the combat; it's a love it or hate it thing; but I don't see how you thought of it being more like Star Trek. Everything in the game felt very Star Wars to me.

lowyhong: I don't know if anyone's noticed this, but remember how Rage has rechargeable health?
Well, so does William Blitzkowicz now.

BJ is his nickname. His name has been William all along ;)
Ever since I learnt about this, "William" has turned from a wussbag name into a kick ass one.

It's relavent in that I bet a bunch of kids complain about it on forums.Hell, professional reviewers have on occassion complained about health packs in games and how it feels "old."
Personally I am fine with both, they both have their advantages and disadvantages... I have to say I like not having to worry about health, as long as the game is still challenging, which most are. I also like planning around my health and such too though. They're both fine with me.
