Like this is ever going to happen soon.
They are just talking to see how people will react.

I don't doubt they can make that kind of graphics, but i will not put my coins in it until they reveal proof that it can do it.
I think its probably one of those things that at first glance, its looks that good. Then when you look closer, you see its not even that close.

Of course there are ways of saying this that can mislead as well. If it only needs to render a single characters head for example, then sure it can probably look as good as Avatar. If you have to render twenty or so complete bodies, then maybe not so much.
I wouldn't recommend the marketing people at Microsoft compare the 720's graphics to Avatar. It kind of implies that looking pretty is the only thing it'll be capable of.

How do you figure?

Look pretty was all Avatar did.

Oh my gosh do I ever feel stupid now. That was great.

YMMV
It won't look anything like avatar, provided the rumored 2013 release date. It'll look closer to it if MS releases it in 2014.

Digital foundry recently did an article examining the potential gpu power of it. A souped up ATI 5770 was the most accurate guess they reached. Not too shabby considering that it was (and kinda still is) =one of the best value GPU's.

Frankly though, I want better physics in everything, so I hope the cpu is a hexacore, or even octo.
I just hope it remains a budget PC in a box so that PC ports don't suffer or become more rare.
Does anyone remember the claim that the PS2 was going to be capable of "A Bug's Life" caliber graphics? Something to think about.
I call bullshit on this article.
That article is filled with nonsense.
I'm sure this is AMD just pimping their next dedicated physics card or some crap.
Too bad the effects in avatar were rendered by a supercomputer (or cluster). And they were all Linux! Take that Microsoft! Good luck getting your 720 to 10 Gigaflops...

Excerpt: "...the company uses all non-windows software to achieve all these cutting edge graphics. The systems used to render these graphics were all using RHEL as their OS and were all HP Blade server clusters. All these systems are 64 bit and the cluster at Weta Digital is one of the world’s largest Linux clusters. It is ranked #193 amongst the top 500 supercomputers of the world with processing capabilities of 10 Gigaflops."
