American McGee's Alice (2000)

by Rogue Entertainment, Westlake Interactive, Aspyr Media, Electronic Arts
Genres:Adventure, Platform, Puzzle
Themes:Action, Horror
Game modes:Single player
Story:Shortly after her second adventure, Through the Looking-Glass, Alice's house is burnt down by an accidental fire, killing her family and leaving her as the only survivor. As time progresses Alice loses touch with reality. She is institutionalized in Rutledge Asylum, where she is observed and treated by Dr. Heironymous Wilson. Alice's only possession in Rutledge is a stuffed rabbit. Ten years after Alice was committed to Rutledge, she finds herself sucked back into a Wonderland that has been twisted by her own broken mind. The White Rabbit summons Alice to aid a radically altered Wonderland, which became a twisted version of itself as it came under the horrible rule of the Queen of Hearts. The Cheshire Cat serves as Alice's companion throughout the game, frequently appearing to guide her with cryptic comments.Show more

This game introduced me to the world of twisted & dark fairy tales. The story, the setting, the gameplay, the art style, the soundtrack - all incredible, especially for its time. I'd love to see this game, and its sequel, preserved DRM-FREE. If possible, I'd love to see an art book and the soundtrack being sold alongside the game!
It's a shame that we won't be able to enjoy a conclusion to this trilogy (the design bible for the third game is available on McGee's socials, so you can read the planned ending), but it's a bigger shame that the game that started it all has been left to rot. Please, consider supporting the restoration of one of the greatest dark adventure games out there, the conjunction of mind bending and gothic imagery is yet unmatched, the writing is superb, and the experience simply magical. Come down the rabbit hole.

I graduated HS with the guy who created the soundtrack, Chris Vrenna formerly of NIN. Bought the disc when the game hit the shelf! The game itself is glitchy and needs some work, BUT the soundtrack is fantastic and worth the price, IMO.
This game, and its sequel, is one that's always meant a lot to me. It came out the same year as I was born, but I discovered it when I was young, and was obsessed ever since. It is a genuinely impressive piece of passionate artistry and risk that you just don't see triple A companies putting out anymore. It's a dark, but sympathetic look at a young, traumatized girl desperately trying to come to terms with her past and save herself from self-annihilation. (Making it far more than just a run-of-the-mill 'dark and edgy' fairy tale/Alice adaptation--there is genuine love and hope in this game). The art direction and music are absolutely beautiful and creatively unhinged, and the gameplay still manages to hold up decently well. I love this game with all my heart, and have always wanted to see it become more accessible to everyone else so that they can love it too.

I didn't play this game until well after it's release, and accessing it on modern platforms is more hassle than it should be (you basically have to buy the sequel and use external patches to access Alice 1 on its own - and that's just for PC players). This game has an incredible mood - gorgeously macabre scenery, a beautifully creepy soundtrack, and characters with poetic wit that's a breath of fresh air from modern quipping protagonists. It's a real gem of its time, and absolutely deserves to be properly preserved.
I finished the sequel (Alice: Madness Returns) to this game last year (2024) and I have never played the first. The second was awesome and I would love to play the first!

What to say about Alice, plenty of Alice's in my life, but Alice Liddell takes the soft spot, what a game what a story, never understood why this game tends to disappear from a best of the best games list, to good to be vapourware.

Just yesterday, I realized there is only part two on Steam and GOG. I already own the game in box, there are online guides to kinda make it work on modern systems but I still can't buy this classic in digital? Heresy! Please bring this hidden gem back, be persisent with EA, reach American James McGee if needed but make it happen!

Conker's Bad Fur Day
Conker's Bad Fur DayHumorous action-platformer that does away with the tedious item collection found in most games in the genre. Instead, BFD employs a combination of standard jump, run and explore mechanics and context-sensitive gags and actions. For instance, in the beginning of the game, by pressing the B button on the first pad he encounters, Conker drinks some Alka-Seltzer to wipe out his hangover, at which point players can proceed forward. Later on these pads are used to activate a slingshot and throwing knives; to turn Conker into an anvil and drop downward; to shoot automatic, double-handed guns; to activate a The Matrix-inspired slow-motion effect and flip through the air shooting enemies; and much, much more.

Kuon
KuonKuon is a horror game set in Heian period (12th century) in Japan. You control three protagonists in the game. The story revolves around a man named Doman, an exorcist who was summoned by one of the noblemen to investigate a cursed manor. His daughter Utsuki is out to search for him when he doesn't return, and her sister is charmed by demons inhabiting a mysterious castle, turning into a demon herself. A young girl named Sakuya, Doman's disciple, also ventures into the depths of the demonic world, to prove herself worthy of her master. Once the player completes Utsuki's and Sakuya's scenarios, they unlocks the third scenario where they experiences the story from the point of view of Doman himself. The game is a mixture of third-person action and puzzle-solving. As in all survival horror games, your means of defense are limited and scarce. Unlike most games of the kind, physical attacks with weapons are not your only way to defend yourself against hordes of undead creatures. You can also learn and cast spells in the game, and even summon creatures (wolves, spiders, etc.) to fight at your side.

Clock Tower II: The Struggle Within
Clock Tower II: The Struggle WithinClock Tower II: The Struggle Within, known as Clock Tower: Ghost Head in Japan, is a PlayStation point-and-click survival horror game and the third installment in the Clock Tower series. It was developed and published by Human Entertainment on March 12, 1998 in Japan and later published by Agetec on October 31, 1999 in North America. It was released as a PlayStation Classic on the Japanese PlayStation Network for PlayStation 3 on May 9, 2012. The game is a spin-off story with little to no connection to the story of the Barrows/Burroughs family or Scissorman, nor was Hifumi Kono involved with it. It does not take place in Europe as many of the others do; it takes place in Osaka, Japan. In the North American version, the setting was changed to Salinas, California, and the characters were given Westernized names. However, untranslated Japanese can be seen in the hospital entrance and even in the intro, there are Japanese-styled buildings, including a Shinto shrine. The game also contains various Japanese-styled rooms and samurai armor.

Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams
Onimusha: Dawn of DreamsOnimusha: Dawn of Dreams is the sixth installment of Capcom's Onimusha overall series, while being the fourth game in the canonical main series. While game retains the action elements from previous Onimusha, it offers a more varied amount of weapons as well as the option of going back to previous stage to unlock new content. The game also introduces a 3D camera as well as the ability to continuously fight alongside AI controlled characters who move depending on the player's orders. Dawn of Dreams was announced by Capcom due to high fan demand and several Capcom members realizing they could expand the action elements from Onimusha after working in Shadow of Rome. The game was designed in order to appeal to skilled gamers rather than the general market which resulted in appealing designs rather than realistic.

Monument Valley
Monument ValleyIn Monument Valley, the player leads the player-character princess Ida through mazes of optical illusions and impossible objects, which are referred to as "sacred geometry" in-game, as she journeys to be forgiven for something. The game is presented in isometric view, and the player interacts with the environment to find hidden passages as Ida progresses to the map's exit. Each of the ten levels has a different central mechanic. Interactions include moving platforms and pillar animals, and creating bridges. The player is indirectly cued through the game by design elements like color, and directly cued by crow people, who block Ida's path. Critics compared the game's visual style to a vibrant M. C. Escher drawing and Echochrome. The game includes a camera mode where the player can roam the level to compose screenshots. It includes filters à la Instagram.
