This was truly the best way to experience Gen 1 Pokemon... at least if you were a fan of the anime. If I remember right, you could even get the rest of the starters over the course of the game.

There are also options to change the type of machine and localization of the games, making it possible to play them in their Japanese version as well as their English localized counterparts.
