This is the first game I played in December 1990 (I think...) on a PC, the first time I sat in front of a PC. Eastern Germany just crashed, Germany got reunited, and a lot of schools got PCs, so people could learn on those machines. Before that only a few people in Eastern Germany got access to a PC.

This game comes back to my mind anytime someone tries to arrange things in a tight space and doesn't give themselves the space they need to keep rearranging... Seriously, this is a really good training opportunity for spacial housekeeping. You have boxes in a maze that need to be pushed into a specific pattern, but you can only push, not pull or otherwise drag, you can only push a single box, and you need to leave yourself enough space to move, too. Once a box is in a corner, it can never get out again, so think before you act. The difficulty levels were actually really well balanced and increasing slowly as they should, teaching you some tactics and strategy on the way. The game does this really well, even by 2024 standard (based on my own memory, at least). The only thing that could have been better would have been extending the mechanics by adding different types of boxes, walls/floor ... the final levels are pretty complex but still combinations of the methods you learned in the earlier ones. :)

Sokoban was one of those seminal games that brought an entirely new and original concept to the gaming world, along with games like Tetris and Lemmings. It may not have been everyone's cup of tea (it was mine!), but it holds a special place in computer gaming history and belongs among GOG's classics.
Those games also need your vote!

Silent Hill
Silent HillSilent Hill is the first installment in the Silent Hill series of psychological survival horror video games. Unlike earlier survival horror games that focused on protagonists with combat training, the main character Harry Mason is an average man. The gameplay consists of combat, exploration, and puzzle-solving. The controller vibration is used to indicate Harry's heartbeat and will vibrate on low health. The player must regularly enter an inventory screen to check Harry's health, use items, and equip different weapons.

Shadow of Destiny
Shadow of DestinyShadow of Memories (Shadow of Destiny in North America) is an adventure game. There are no action elements in the game, and the protagonist has no health bar. Each chapter has a time limit, during which Eike has to find a way to prevent the murderer from killing him. This is mainly achieved by traveling through time to different hours, days, years, and even centuries. Obtaining a crucial item, having a conversation with a specific character, or performing another action in the past will prevent Eike from getting killed. Time-traveling requires energy units, which can be found by exploring the town. If Eike fails to achieve the goal at hand within the allotted time and prevent his murder, the chapter must be restarted. During the course of the game the player will have several choices and opportunities to change the future in various ways. Due to the time-traveling feature, many objectives can be accomplished in non-linear ways, branching the storyline and eventually resulting in eight different endings, six of which can be achieved during the first playthrough, and two others unlocked after having reached the other six.

Discworld
DiscworldDiscworld is a game released for PC (subsequently Mac, and Playstation) by Teeny Weeny / Perfect 10 studios in 1995. The game was released both on floppy disk and CD-Rom. The latter featured a commentary team created of many veterans of famous Brit-Coms. This included Monty Python's Eric Idle, Radio 4's (later to be more famous) Rob Brydon, ex- Doctor Who John Pertwee, 70s pop singer Kate Robbins, and Blackadder star Tony Robinson. The game is a riff on the Discworld title 'Guards, Guards', however many elements of the text have been shifted, not least the inclusion of Rincewind as protagonist. The game featured puzzles which were considered far too difficult and obtuse for gamers of the time, but the game itself has had a lasting legacy, now being accepted into such emulators as SCUMMVM.
