Tenchu 2: Birth of the Stealth Assassins

Tenchu 2: Birth of the Stealth Assassins (2000)

by ACQUIRE Corp., Activision
Genres:Adventure
Themes:Action, Fantasy, Historical, Stealth
Game modes:Single player
Story:Tenchu 2 is a prequel to Tenchu, telling a tale of events prior to those of the previous game. Once again, you can play as Ayame or Rikimaru, two faithful and honorable ninja whose lord is a gentle man in an age of warfare. With your training nearly complete, you find yourself caught up in aiding your lord against a civil war in his own domain. All is not what it seems, however, and you'll soon realize that your greatest threat has been forged much like you. Much like its predecessor, Tenchu 2 is a 3D third person stealth action game. You are not only rewarded for stealth, but also for efficiency of movement this time. This extra feature increases the difficulty of achieving the better items, as you not only have to be quiet, but be direct and near perfect in your steps.Show more

Tenchu 2 was my introduction into the series and remains my favorite of all the sequels. The graphics, audio and bone slicing, steel on steel sound effects created an authentic feudal Japan atmosphere that still holds up even today. From what I can recall there was no other stealth ninja game available on the PS1 beside the Tenchu series. The first title even predated the legendary Metal Gear Solid! The ability to play through the campaign with 3 different protagonists kept things fresh with day/night changes to locations and different bosses which made each play-through unique and was pretty impressive at the time. It was a challenging game especially when it came to boss fights as your ninja was not well suited for one on one duels but instead excelled in attacking from the shadows with a variety of tools. It would be great if the port could make use of save states as having to replay an entire level if you failed at a boss may require some long lost patience that doesn't exist anymore. In addition to the awesome campaign was the level editor where I spent many hours creating my own level scenarios. It would be interesting to see how sharing created levels could be done with a GOG port. I look forward to rejoin Rikimaru, Ayame and Tatsumaru on their journey to relive some memories of old via an modern day accessible GOG port.
Back in the early 2000s I used to play it on my PS1. It was a bootleg version with an awful and cringy Russian translation. Though I still loved this game. The gameplay was a pure gem! And the story is still my favourite. Actually it's the first game ever that made me cry. That one moment closer to the end, all the endings, the music... This game's story and atmosphere make it my most favorite game ever.

Tales of Destiny
Tales of DestinyTales of Destiny is a follow-up to Tales of Phantasia. Like its predecessor, it has the structure of traditional Japanese role-playing games, but substitutes turn-based combat for action-oriented one. Battles take place on separate side-scrolling screens and resemble those of a fighting game. The player controls the main hero, navigating him on the battle screen and performing various attacks and combos. Other party members are controlled by the game's AI, but it is possible to pause the battle at any time and assign new combat style to any one of them.
