Warhawk is one of the most underrated gems of its era. It is a well-balanced 3rd person shooter with various combat game modes, featuring giant maps and exciting strategic gameplay. There is no story line, only straight forward team vs. team combat with a wide array of gear, vehicles, and weapons at your disposal. Each game is a unique experience. You start off with only a pistol and trusty blade as you and your team race to find strategically placed weapons, gear, and vehicles to destroy the opposition with. The vehicles and weapons are fun and challenging to use, each piece of weaponry possesses its own unique advantages, and disadvantages. Nearly every range, type and method of lethality are properly represented here. Warhawk’s huge maps are well designed with strategically set weapon spawn points, sniping spots, choke points, and secret areas to explore.
A bit like a proto-Warzone but without all the extra garbage. Warhawk gives players freedom to play however they want and to change playstyles on the fly; if you feel like playing offense, defense, team-player or mercenary, it’s all good! You can traverse the map as infantry with a jetpack, sit on a perch with a sniper rifle, commandeer a fast-moving jeep, grab a tank, or even fly the coveted Warhawk fighter planes, which is a truly awesome experience.
The game’s official servers have been offline for years now, but the game is still playable via 3rd party servers with some tweaks to the PS3. But this is not enough.
Not only should Warhawk be preserved by GOG.com, this game should be offered as a curriculum in schools, modded, and celebrated at local gaming institutions, or maybe even re-mastered. Its well-balanced gameplay puts players’ critical thinking skills, and reflexes to the test as their lethality increases with experience. Experience comes in the form of learning how to maximize the destructive force of Warhawk’s weaponry, or remembering where to find your favorite weapons on each map. Love it!
