With GOG's new preservation program, hopefully we will see the classic versions of these titles added and made compatible with modern operative systems.

It would be a huge failure of a "Preservation Program" to not separate these versions and make the classics available for purchase once again.
not again
Enhanced Editions are a failure in my eyes, and a great example, why the original versions should be also available and preserved.

That is up to the devs. I think the fact they manage to get them added with the EE edition is still great. Steam don't get any of these(BG, IWD, PST, NWN DIamond)

While it's true that the classic versions are bundled with the EE, and I am happy for that, however, I think the main feature of the preservation program is updating older incompatible games to be playable on modern OS.

Yes, the classic games can be played right now but for some it requires a bit of fiddling or you need mods to make it playable. I understand it's Beamdog's decision, but hopefully GOG will be able to at least update the classic versions
I would like to have an option to install Baldur's Gate vanilla version (no expansion) and separately choose if I want to install TotSC. I would like to make a series of videoes about evolution of infinity engine games, step by step. There were differences between vanilla and TotSC. There were even bigger differences in Icewind Dale.
For my last playthroughs I also rolled back to vanilla (5 CD version, no expansion) and I actually enjoyed it a lot. Indeed, there are quite a few differences and since we're talking preservation: the original incarnation (first release) of some titles was how many got their first hand experience with them. It would be great to have such option, but it would also require a truckload of work to keep more than one version of the game kept updated to run properly on newer systems, so it probably won't happen.
At 56, I've played through the entire evolution, including the many years/editions of Mods. EE mega modded is the best.
