I've been having some problems with the audio in this game. I'm on Windows XP and the game more or less runs fine, but many of the sound effects appear to be missing or not playing at all. This is particularly obvious in combat, where sound effects for attacks and spells are almost nonexistent and things are oddly quiet.

Is this just the way the game is, or is there a problem? If so, how do I fix it?

Have you tried messing about with the sound hardware acceleration slider in the dxdiag?
No, I haven't tried that. What would you recommend I set it to? Or should I just try all the different settings and see what works?

Admittedly I'm still not sure whether it's a fault with my system or the game is just rather quiet during combat... A few sounds do occur, but for the most part things seem strangely silent.

Yea just try all the different settings see if any of them help. Also turn your sound up in combat and see if you can hear anything or not.
I've lowered the sound settings to standard and that appears to have helped... At least the fights are sounding much more lively, anyway. I think that's it more or less fixed.

Thanks for the suggestions.
