Is this something new they borrowed from PoE?

Well, it's completly taking the game out of the game. Much as well watch some movie instead.

Actually, many of the changes improve the games a lot, now that subsequent bugfixing patches have been released. I agree that the original release was a disaster though...

Do you mean like the fact that now spells can only be memorised alphabetically or the fact that level 6 Edwin in BG:EE only knows a couple of level 1 spells?
