If memory serves branwen is stone at the fair and I need to get potion to save her. Yeah evil vhars don't like the choices that I make.... but maybe I should do an evil run. Are evil party members worth doing an evil run? I've played bg2 through like 8 times and never made an evil char

There are some decent evil characters (Edwin being the prime example,) but being evil doesn't really add much to the game, and makes things more expensive, so if you like playing good characters, stick with that.

Cheapest option to free Branwen is to buy a scroll at a temple (there's one in Nashkel). There's an NPC close to Branwen who will sell you a scroll too but but one from the temple is much cheaper. Branwen can cast magic hammer 3x per day which is very useful early in the game as it let's her hit creature that require magic weapons.

Coelocanth: Cheapest option is to pick pocket the scroll from the NPC near Branwen. ;)
