chris1995: I just wanted to know what resolutions people play the original, unmodded BG1 on.

I don't mind playing the 640x480 resolution at 4:3 even if its fuzzy.

CFM: Me too!

I can't remember what video card I have, but it's 2-3 years old, and it uses the GeForce Experience, so it's an NVidia card. And I'm using Windows 7. And I'm using a 2-3 year-old widescreen monitor with its recommended resolution of 1920 x 1080.

When I install the gog version of the original BG1 (not EE) with the TotSC expansion, my pc runs the game in "full" screen mode (not windowed), with the default (crappy) resolution, with the black bars on both sides of the screen. This automatically happens without me adjusting anything.

I much prefer the better BG2 highest 'supported' resolution, or even the highest 'supported' resolution for IWD1 with the HoW expansion. (I can't remember if they are different or not.)

But even so, I prefer to play 'em unmoded, as the original designers intended. If there is a way to use a better resolution with the original BG1 without mods, I've never heard of it.

So I'm with you man. Hate the resolution, but I live with it, because it's my favorite game series of all time. Cheers!
Thanks for the perspective. I just realized I don't need to change my resolution down to 640x480 from 1080p. I can run it and then set the aspect ratio to 4:3 on my monitor settings to get the black bars. I imagine BG2 will be a little less fuzzy since that supports 800x600 and possibly 1024x768 if you modify the INI file.

There's something so rich about the UI for Baldur's Gate so I refuse to install mods that messes with what it was supposed to look like. My only complaint is that I can't write notes in my journal. I can't remember if that was a feature in the original BG2, but I think it was in the EE.

Yeah I never had any issues with the original BG user interface. (Maybe an issue with removing a shield to equip a bow or other two-handed weapon, but that was about it.) If it ain't broke, don't fix it. (People that complained about BG's UI always had me puzzled as to wtf they were talkin about.)

IIRC - You can add notes to the maps in BG2. (I can't remember if that was a feature added with ToB install, or that feature was with the original SoA.) I don't remember if you could add notes to the journal or not.

It's not that I'm against the Enhanced Editions.

My only beef with the originals on today's PCs is the non-widescreen resolution. And, if I played this more, I could see a yearning for additional content.

But I hear pro-quality fan-made mods exist for both these issues.... so I just don't see a need for the Enhanced Editions.

Then why don't you just use the widescreen mod?

Back when I played BG1 years ago, these mods didn't exist. But if I were to play BG1 again (which I definitely hope to do someday) I think I would try the widescreen mod.

Normally I like to play games unmodded, play 'em the way the original designers intended.... but I'm pretty sure I'd try the widescreen mod for BG1 if I were to play that again. As great a game as BG1 is, its resolution is just too horrible.

For a game the size of BG1, it'd be hard to stare at a screen for months on end in that resolution.... so I think I would soften my "no mods" insistence and use the widescreen mod.

If you decide to play with widescreen mod, you can add GUI mod that would center certain screens and you can choose one of optional background images:

Thanks Tuthrick. That sounds like it'd make the widescreen mod even better!
