Is BG a solo character game in which I recruit party members, or do I create an entire party? And if its solo, do the members I recruit act on there own by taking simple commands from me (like in Fallout), or do I control them directly as if they were entirely mine (like in Might & Magic)?

Haven't bought the game (yet), but I'd just like to know ahead of time. Thanks in advance. :-)

You have a direct control over party members, and, unlike Icewind Dale, you recruit members to your party. System is your typical RTS control scheme with pausing involved. You don't REALLY start solo, however, since right after the training part a first member of your party joins you.
You create a single character, but if you want, you can start a game in multiplayer mode and create the whole party by yourself.

You control the party members like your own character, but you can enable character AI so that party members cast spells and use skills on their own (not recommended, i always disable party AI to have full control).

Well that's only if you use scripts, they sort of just stand there and auto-pick targets in their weapon range when you don't and have AI on. I for one find it useful, I have a thief script for my thief that makes her automatically detect traps... quite handy
One notable thing about BG is the way a lot of companions come in pairs that can't be split up except by getting one of them killed and then drop them from the party. Montaron won't leave without taking xzar, jaheria won't leave without khalid, minsc won't leave without dynaheir (once you rescue her). It can make taking a good single character a bit harder
You can separate pairs without killing off the second character in the duo. Walk the one you want to get rid of (solo) into a hut you never plan on going back to, then dismiss them. No muss, no fuss.
